I woke up to the sound of chirping birds outside my window. I got up lazily from my bed, half asleep and half awake, tiptoeing to the bathroom so I don't wake everyone up. I always get up early because I like the feeling of getting up before everyone else. I quickly showered and got ready and went into the shared living room to find Gio sitting there reading a book next to the fireplace."Hey, what are you doing up so early?" I asked with my morning voice.
He looked up and saw me, "I always like the feeling of an empty castle. Being free to think whenever without getting interrupted," He replied.
"That's a good way to put it," I agreed.
"Wanna go for a walk?" He asked, scratching the back of his neck.
"Okay," I smiled.
We exited the door and went outside the castle into the transition of night to morning sky. The long grass swayed, and the wind was picking up. The sun was peeking through the trees, and we could see the pond that the Horned Serpent was once in but escaped when more kids were joining the school.
"So, the sign up for the competition is after breakfast. Are you entering?" I asked, trying to make conversation.
"Yes, I made friends in the library yesterday. They seemed pretty cool and we decided to make a group." He said throwing rocks in the pond.
"Nice! My friends and I decided too! We still have to figure out our positions and stuff, but we look like a good group." I said picking up rocks and passing them to Gio every time he threw one.
"Hey," he said looking at his watch, " it's almost time for breakfast." Just as he said that it started to rain. We both ran up the muddy hill and into the castle.
"Shouldn't we find a supply closet and get a towel?" He said while we looked at our wet hair and wet clothes.
"Or we could dry ourselves off with magic...?" He suggested.
"True... but I forgot the spell" I smiled sheepishly.
He nodded and we walked to the nearest supply closet we could find. We found one next to the Dining Hall. I opened it, hoping to find a towel, but instead, Gio pushed me in, closed the door and locked it.
"GIO! Let me out!" I said slamming my hands to the door hoping that somebody could hear me.
"Sorry Ava. But if you sign up.. My group won't even have a chance." He said. I heard footsteps walking away from the door. I screamed, "LET ME OUT!! SOMEBODY!!" But no one came.
An hour past and no one found me. I'm not gonna make it to sign up I thought to myself. Just then I heard voices coming closer to the door,
"Where is she? Where is Ava?" I heard someone say. Then I realized it was Mack.
"MACK!! I'M IN HERE!!" I yelled. They came to the door and tried to open it.
"It's locked." I heard Lance say. I heard nothing, but then they opened the door. They must've done a spell to unlock it.
"Who locked you in here?" Keith asked.
"Gio," I said. Keith tightened his fists and stormed out of the closet, "Keith!"
I tried to chase after him, but I lost him in the crowd of people in the Dining Hall. The sign up!!! I finally found Keith, he was half way towards Gio. I caught up with him and jumped in front of him.
"Don't stoop to his level" I said. I held out my hand for him to take. He grabbed it and took one last glance at Gio and started walking towards our team. When we got there, neither of us let go of each other's hands. I was pretty short next to him that my eyes reached his shoulders.
"LET THE SIGN UP BEGIN!!" The headmaster said with a loud voice to quiet everybody. All we had to do to sign up, was to tell the professors who is going to be in the team. I walked up to professor Gavia, told him our team and we exited the Dining Hall.
"I heard some Professors talking about how there is going to be a Hogwarts Professor teaching a class here for a couple of days," Lance said to us.
"I wonder who it could be!" Isabelle said excitingly. We kept talking about who the leader should be all the way to our practicing dome.
I was quiet in all this, I didn't want anybody thinking that someone else is better than the other for the job. Keith stared at me when we sat on some tree stumps.
"I think it should be Ava" he said simply. My eyes widened.
"I agree" they said in unison.
"No, no and no" I said very nervous, "I- I don't want to be leader."
Everybody started giving reasons of why I should be leader and how I would fit the job.
"But I don't want to boss people around!" I said trying to overlap them to get them to stop talking.
"Are you kidding? You're the queen of bossing people around!" Lance said. I narrowed my eyes at him and gave him my famous death stare.
Keith started to talk, "Ava, you can do this. You're perfect for the job. All you need is some encouragement. We're all here for you."
I sighed, "fine,"
Everybody started to hug me and pick me up. We talked about everybody else positions. Mack will be in charge of food. Keith will be in charge of shelter. Lance will be in charge of being on look out for other teams. Isabelle will be in charge of books and knowledge about the Horned Serpent. And I, will be the leader.
