Selene arrived at the hospital about an hour later. She sat in the car for a few minutes to just calm herself down, as she was sobbing... yet again. "I don't even know why I'm crying." she said out loud as she wiped away the makeup that ran. "I have no reason to be." Selene fixed her makeup and stood up out of the car, walking into the hospital.
She immediaely walked up to the elevator and stepped inside, poking the button for the sixth floor. The slow elevator music was a sonata Chasity had to play for a solo ensemble audition. As soon as the doors opened, Selene practically leapt out of the elevator and into Chasity's room, numbered 146.
At that moment, she got very confused. The girl who she'd fallen in love with in ninth grade still lay there, perfectly still in her bed, the heart monitor beeping like it should. But when the door closed behind her, the doctor's face, along with her mother's shocked, crying face made Selene want to punch the nearest wall.
"Miss Clay?" Selene said worriedly. She walked over to the crying widow and hugged her. "What's happening? What's going on?"
"Are you Selene?" the doctor asked her. Selene looked up from the small woman and nodded. "Yes, I am, sir. What's going on?" The doctor sighed and asked her to take a seat. Naturally, Selene sat on Chasity's bedside. The doctor, not wanting to argue, sighed and told her the story.
Chasity has now been in a coma for two weeks. At this point, there will definitely be damage done to her brain, and her memories won't be intact. She will have brain damage. She'll have to go through rehabilitation and therapy. She may even lose some of her memories.
Selene was prepared to cry. But she didn't. She just sat there, numb, unable to speak, cry, or even move. All she could do was stare at her hands in her lap and try to process the issue at hand. "I'm really sorry," the doctor said, standing up. "I'll leave you two." he walked out without another word.
"Miss Clay, are you alright?" Selene asked, trying not to show her weakness. Chasity's mother nodded and pulled Selene close for another hug. "I'm glad Chasity has someone like you." her mother whispered through her sobs. "Hopefully you haven't forgotten any of your memories."
Selene choked back a tear. "Yes, ma'am, I remember then all. All from day one."
It was the middle of October in the seventh grade when the two girls met for the first time. They met in band, when they both left their insturments at home, Selene's being her flute, Chasity's being her alto saxophone. As Chasity was sassing their band teacher, Selene walked up and the two instantly bonded. They walked and talked and had the greatest year.
Then eighth grade happened.
Everyone became absorbed in schoolwork, and people began realizing things about themselves. That year, Chasity began to feel sad, and didn't know how to cope. Her father screwed everyone over and her mother had been widowed. She began to self harm, and even attempted suicide a few times. Her mother never found out.
That was also the year Eli and Reuben came out and said they were gay, and proud of it, too. They were finally able to be themsevles. But junior high was a bucket of laughs compared to high school. The whole friend group knew it, too, and when the day came that they became high schoolers, the whole group was terrified.
Except for the band kids. The band kids already had upperclassmen friends, and even though they were extremely obnoxious at first, they freshmen began to rely on those friends for moral support and advice when they truly needed it.
