Hope sat on the roof of a bar, her legs dangling over the edge as she looked up at the sky. The orange slowly began to fade into the horizon, purple and blues replacing it. The beautiful serenity of it comforted her and scared her all at once.

Hope, he had written her name neatly at the top of the page in his cursive handwriting.

Lately all I've been thinking about is you. You're like a song stuck in my head and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't my favourite.

Writing these letters has been helping me keep a grip on reality. I keep getting confused with my dreams and reality. For instance in my dreams you are mine and I am yours. But then I wake up and remember that you're too good for me.

Even if you weren't I still wouldn't deserve someone like you. You are the epitome of ethereality. You deserve so much more than I could ever give you, which is why I've been lying to everyone – including myself.

Hope looked up at the night sky in confusion, as if the stars might bring her some clarity.

The truth is, I don't love Elena. I don't think I ever have. And I think that the reason I tell other people that I do is to hide my love for you because I'm scared. I'm scared that if they could see how brilliant you are, they'd fall for you too.

Hope's lips turned up into a smile.

But it's too dangerous for us to ever be together. I'm sorry, Hope. The last thing I'd ever want to do is hurt you.

Her smile fell and tears flowed freely from her bright eyes.

Love, Stefan.

The girl carefully made her way from the edge of the building and down into the bar below. She sat down and ordered a beer, all she wanted to do was erase him from her mind.

"I wouldn't drink that if I were you," a man warned. Hope turned to him, placing the bottle on the counter top.

"And why not?"

"Well, considering your state, I don't think it would be wise."

"And what is my state?" Hope rested her chin on her palm, examining the stranger in front of her. He had curly sandy-blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. There was something about him that seemed familiar but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.

"Call it a hunch, but I think it's best you see a doctor as soon as possible."

The human let out a small laugh and turned her head away for a second, only to find that the stranger sat next to her was gone.
