Stefan sat by her bed for hours, patiently waiting for the pale girl to wake up. She thrashed when she did, pulling at the IV in her hand.

"Hope, calm down," Stefan soothed, grabbing her by the shoulders.

"I – she – blood."

The girl in front of him was unable to form proper sentences, her hands continued to tremble, and her usually bright eyes had a wild glint in them and couldn't manage to stay focused.

"The doctor said you had a miscarriage. Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant?" She shrugged and stayed silent. "You're obviously not going to let me help you so I'm going to stop wasting my time."

Stefan stood up, ready to leave when her thin fingers wrapped around his wrist.

"Stay, please," Hope begged.

If this had taken place 24 hours earlier, if he still had his humanity intact, then she was sure things would've played out differently. But it hadn't and he didn't, so Stefan left without so much as a goodbye.

But as he walked through the halls of the hospital he couldn't help but wonder: What is it about her that makes me care so damn much?

Matt sat by her bed, the bouquet of flowers he had brought were sitting on the table next to her sleeping figure.

She began stir, more calmly than she had the first time. Her green eyes opened slowly, and a groan left her lips as she sat up.

"Matt? What are you doing here?"

"You just kind of, passed out, and then Elena called saying that you were here," the Donovan boy shrugged. "I just wanted to see how you were doing."

"I'm fine," Hope answered, but it clearly wasn't the truth.

"Hope, c'mon, you know you can – "

"Don't. Just, don't," she cut him off tiredly.

"I want to help you."

"Then get me out of here."

He was silent as he nodded in response. Matt slowly stood up and left to search for a doctor.

Hope was discharged a short while later, the Donovan boy drove her home and helped her to her bed. He stayed with her, watching movies until she fell asleep.

He would always love her, even if he knew that he was nothing more than a distraction for her.
