"Megan! Wake up!" my younger sister shouts. "Come on! You're going to miss your test!" she manages to pull off the covers.
I roll around on the bed, hoping she gets the message. She prods me.
"All right, all right! I'm up!" I sit up in bed. "Now get out. I need time to get ready."
"I'll tell mom you are." She shuts the door after her.
'Finally. I thought she would never leave.' I think to myself for a moment. 'Time to get ready for the day. But, oh, I'm so scared! What if I mess up?'
I physically shake my head to get rid of the thought, and then go over to my dresser to pick out sensible clothing for the day. A black t-shirt of an old TV show that's come back around, Doctor Who, and some grey capri shorts, along with red high-top converse, with pink socks.
Then I head out to the kitchen to eat a small breakfast, and drink a lot of liquids, as the instructor told me on the last review. My mom rushes around, trying to get my younger sisters under control, and to make my older brother help out. Dad is reading the news in the living room, on the wall.
"Good morning." Dad mouths to me as I pass by. I wave.
I hop into the kitchen. "Good morning!"
"Good morning, Meg. Oh dear, you look tired!"
My brother smirks. "Were you up reading the Phantom of the Opera, again?"
"Brendan, don't be rude!" my mom scolds.
"For your information, Br-AN-DON," saying his name wrong because I know he hates that spelling, "I was, and it's not my fault it's so...captivating, and mom, it was just an inquiry."
He laughs, shaking his head, and then went back to his breakfast. Nikki and Millie finally settle into their chairs. They giggle and look at me with their googly eye impression.
I raise an eyebrow, to which they laugh some more, and then I eat some instant cereal. After that, I chug down three cups of water.
"Come on, sweetie; we're going to be late." Mom says.
"One second!" I rush to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and tackle my bird's nest of hair. I rush back out to the living room. "It feels like I'm forgetting something..."
"You need to take a small pack, with clothes for three days, along with a jacket, some spoil-free food, some water, utilities and other cleaning necessities, along with your charger and-"
"But my phone can charge using the sunlight!"
"Still, you may never know. And if you get lost for some reason, we'll keep paying your bill until you return to us." Dad smiles, trying to ease the mood. "Go now."
I dash off to my room and grab my backpack. I grab three days' worth of clothes, my tooth and hairbrush, along with some toothpaste, some supplies for the hellish waterfall, my charger, earbuds, and then dash out to the kitchen to grab two water bottles, and two sandwich bags, one full of cereal, and the other mini pretzels.
I tap mom on the shoulder, and then head out to the car while she says her goodbyes to everyone else. I wave to my siblings before mom shuts the door.
We get in the car, and then drive off to the testing center.
"Are you ready?" Mom asks.
"Still a little scared."
"Don't be. You'll be fine. All you have to do is insert the code they give you into your vortex manipulator, and then we'll give you the code to come back to today, okay?"
I sigh. "Still doesn't mean I'll mess up."
"If something goes wrong, it's the machine's fault, not yours."
The rest of the ride is in silence.
We get to the center, and instantly we are greeted with the tester.
"Good morning! How are you today, Ms. Williams?" he's referring to me, apparently.
I yawn. "I'm rather tired."
"Aww, well the test is fairly short and simple, and then when you finish, you can go back home and get some more sleep. How does that sound?"
'What I had in mind, already.' "Sounds great."
"Wonderful! Now, come with me to our station..."
I hug my mom before I follow the man to the testing station.
In the station, a stool waits idly with a manipulator resting on top of it. The tester nods his head to it, meaning I go over there, and I go. I put it on, and await for further instruction.
"When the date appears on the screen, you are to put the correct coordinates into your manipulator. When you have done so, hit the top button once to activate the manipulator, and then the bottom button twice to actually go. Ready?"
My stomach tightens, but I nod anyway.
The date appears on the screen, which is, June twenty-ninth, X-eighty-eight. I type in the month and date with their corresponding numbers, but then I studder at the year. June twenty-ninth was a couple of days ago, but how do I type in the years again? Is it subtractive for the first two digits, or is it just as it is, like the month and day?
I try the latter, hit the top button once, and then hit the bottom button twice.
I get thrown into a place, and then I feel the ground beneath my feet. I stumble, feel a wall my with hands, and my head meets with it, making me fall to the ground.
The last thing I see is a figure making its way towards me, and then I pass out.
