Chapter 9

My mom always told me I would have a cousin. Before she died, I asked her what her name was, she said Jaylie. I was surprised I didn't think I would ever meet her! I was so amazed I adopted her myself, with my moms signature. Tehehe. After a few hours, the lady left. I got up and was beginning to walk out of the house when I heard small foot steps. "Am I going to get a horsey?" I smiled down at my feet. "Yes, come with me." I said. She decided to race to the barn, of course me being taller, I won. She was pretty fast though, but not fast enough. I was walking her to the barn when Kyle just appears out of no where, "hey Leigh, who's this?" He asked. I was about to answer when the small voice behind me said something. "I am Jaylie, Leigh's cousin." She said. She is not stupid. I laughed and so did Kyle. We walked to the barn, Kyle was taking care of the horses. "What horse would you like?" I asked as we entered the barn. Her eyes lit up when she saw Chico, a small bay stallion with a star on his head. "Him," she said. "What's his name?" I loved Chico and knew him well, they would get along perfectly together. "That's Chico," I said. "He's a really good horse. He shouldn't give you hardly any trouble." She was up on her tip toes petting the small star on his massive forehead. "Would you like to groom him? He could use it." I say she smiles and nods her head.

I show her his grooming supplies, she grabs his lead and clips it to his halter. I show her how to hold the lead and where, excess rope in the left, rope being used is in the right and keep about 6 inches away from the horses hooves.

"Would you like to walk him?" I asked her eyes lit up and I knew the answer, I hand her the rope and she does everything correctly. She already knew where to tie him, outside by the water hose. "Alright you know how to turn the hose on but turn it on low. You are going to get him wet, wash him up with the soap, and rinse him off and make sure all the soap is off ok?" She was smart. Horses are in our blood. She did it on her first try!

"We will start riding tomorrow ok? He's a kids horse, we had him for lessons for kids awhile back he won't mind starting again. In fact, he will love to be back out of that stall." She lead him back to his stall and gave him a sugar cube that I gave her. That was his favorite, she saw Nexus.

"Who's that?" She asked. "You can't tell dad ok?" I could trust her. She nods. "I found him when I was riding pumpkin to a gas station for fun so I brought him home. Dad don't know, he said he would let me have a horse next year. No telling anyone K?" She nods again. Kyle walked through the barn, he stopped when he saw Jaylie.

"Who's this?" He asked with a smile across his face. Oh that smile. "This is Jaylie, my cousin." She hid behind me. I don't blame her, he had a towering figure to her. And me. "Hi Jaylie, im Kyle. You can ask me anything about horses and I can pretty much answer each and every one of them." He said. Now it was my turn to smile.

He smirked and I blushed a little. A LITTLE. He started to laugh and I hid my face. "I thought you'd like some help to lunge Nexus and maybe even tack him up?" He asked unsure of what I would say. "Sure" Is all I said.

I grabbed Nexus' lead and clipped it to his new halter. He snorted with his ears pinned but other wise, walked with me. I led him to the round pen, lunge whip in my hand. This time, I would make him go right and left. I gave a small touch to his bum with the whip and he was walking. Walking! I made him go around like that for a few minutes then decided to veer him left at a trot. He did well, his ears were perked and his eyes held that fiery spirit that a lot of wild horses hold.

I wanted to try to groom him, Jaylie would be watching. "Woah," I said. He stopped, looking at me. Something popped into my head, wild horses bolt, they don't listen to humans that well, "Kyle, go to findahorse.com and see if he's missing from someone please," I was leading him back to his stall, just out of the round pen. "I think he was abused."
