A few blocks from the cinema, my phone rang.
"Yeah?"
"Benjamin," Vic said, "I know Lily lied about what happened between you two."
I gulped.
"Right."
"I'm sorry, Benjamin. I am. But Lily and I fought about it and then she left and now I don't know where she is or what she's doing – "
"Vic, calm down. I just heard from her. She's fine."
"She is? Oh god, where is she? Is she safe?"
"She's drunk as hell and hanging out in some old cinema on Westerman. Don't ask me where she got the grog, but she's off her face. Called me out of the blue, yelling and screaming."
"On Westerman?"
"Yeah, I think it's the one you told me about – the one you used to take her to when she was little."
"Yes," he said, mind wandering. "Thank you. And I'm so sorry."
"Yeah, whatever man. You go on, catch up with her. Make sure she's okay. I left some stuff at your place when you tried to bash my head in. I'll head over now while you deal with Lily."
"Sure, of course," he said awkwardly. "I'll leave it at the front desk."
"Good. I'll be by soon to get it."
I hung up.
