It wasn't until we got back to the apartment that it hit me.

The money.

In the rush of blood and adrenaline, the thought had been lost, drowned out by the scream of sirens, the explosion of panic, and the beat of a racing heart. But Vic hadn't forgotten. You could see it on his face.

"Vic," I whispered as the car pulled to a stop.

"I know," he said. "I know."

"So what are we going to do?"

With a small sigh, I watched his hands drop from the steering wheel and slowly curl up in his lap. For a second, I saw the tears in his eyes. All the fight and drive in him being ripped away, leaving only what lay underneath. The truth behind his charade. But then he sucked in a breath and looked up out the window, eyes revealing his struggle, but his body deceiving as if it were second nature.

"I'll figure it out," he said confidently. "I always do."
