Snow Girl

For Olivia

For the longest time,
I didn't understand why you called yourself "Snow Girl"
When you were a matchstick that lit candles on birthday cakes.
You were hot chocolate that warmed me from the inside
After spending too much time in the frost with the wrong coat.
You were fireflies I chased after with a jar,
And even through the pitch black night you glowed.

I never thought I would laugh
At someone falling off a cliff.
But in a virtual world,
You claim flying and falling with style
Are basically the same thing.
With you, it's true.

I never thought I would smile
At the mention of a monster,
But with you around,
You are brave enough to stare them in the eye,
and with a few words they become your friends.

I didn't understand why,
Why you named yourself after frost
That will bite fingertips in warning if you get too close.
Why did you name yourself after something
That I shield myself from with our family's thickest blanket?
Why did you name yourself after something so cold,
When you are the warmest thing in the room?

It took me a while,
Almost two years,
To realize that isn't what you intended.

You named yourself after crystals
That formed pictures on windowpanes.
You named yourself after pristine snowflakes
That danced through the sky to the ground.
You named yourself after the snowball
That a friend will throw, the one that will be returned,
And all the laughs that come with the war to follow.
Because that is what you are.

And when I figured this out,
I realized how lucky
I am to call you my friend.

So...I wrote this for school last year, and I keep forgetting to post it online, so here it is! I performed this at one of my school's Poetry Readings last year (I go to an arts school, and I'm in the Creative Writing department, so stuff like that's pretty common :D). It was inspired by OliviaLovesSnow , because she's such a good friend and I wanted to write something about her. (Unfortunately, I can't find the video of myself performing this in public, but if I do, I'll definitely post it :D). So...yeah! Love you to pieces Olivia, and I hope you like this!

(P.S. There are two references in this poem, one to the video I did with Olivia and another about Olivia's original characters, Endy and Wilton :))
