"Stop hogging the bathroom!" Lucifer yells through the door.
"I'm not hogging the bathroom!" Anna yells back.
"Ive been standing out here for twenty-five minutes since your shower ended and you're still in there!" Lucifer complains.
"Then next time, take your shower before me!"
"I couldn't take my shower first because-"
"Chuck was yelling at you for being an idiot?" Anna interrupts. "Hey, not my problem."
"AMARA, ANNA CALLED ME AN IDIOT!" Lucifer yells, a smug smirk on his face.
"Stop fighting!" Amara replies, her voice loud despite her calmness. "Anna, hurry up. Lucifer, wait your turn."
Lucifer and Anna groan, both assuming she took the other's side. That happens a lot in the family. After all, it's a big household, and they can't all get along. There are five kids in the family, all adopted by the siblings Chuck and Amara. From oldest to youngest is Michael, Lucifer, Gabriel, Anna, and Castiel. They've been living in this house for as long as they could remember, and their adoptive parents don't talk about the time before they were adopted. It's never bothered them, though. There's enough to fight about as it is; no need to add the past to it.
Anna finally comes out of the bathroom, her red hair in two flawless French braids so that when it dries, it will curl. She sticks her tongue out at her brother, who rolls his eyes in response before heading in to take his own shower. The fight for the showers is always the biggest. With five kids and two adults, obviously they need a lot of shower time, and someone always complains about going too soon or too late. Chuck and Amara have yet to find a good system, because no matter what they do, someone will not be pleased.
"Hey, Castiel!" Anna calls out.
"Yes, Anna?" the youngest brother replies from his room, already showered and ready for school tomorrow. He's like that; always prepared for everything. His clothes are lagged out for the entire week as if Sunday night, and his homework is always done the day he gets it. It's how Castiel operates, and it's effective, so no one questions it.
"I need help with my math homework!"
Castiel gets up immediately. He hates to leave his siblings waiting if they need him, especially Anna, who's his favorite of the family. He looks around for her, finding her in her room access from his. He sits down on the edge of the bed she's sprawled across carelessly, careful to avoid both her body and her work.
"What do you need help with?" he asks.
She gestures to her wildly set up notes. "This."
Castiel frowns and picks one page up. Ah, this is easy. Even though they're the same age, Castiel has always been the brightest of the two, though he'd never say it himself. Even though he's still a sophomore, Castiel is surrounded by juniors and seniors in his classes as much as people his age, whereas Anna is mostly with sophomores, being an average person with an average brain capacity. She often teases her brother about that, saying he must be an alien for being so smart. It's almost as if she forgets about Michael, the eldest of the five siblings, who's been taking college classes since middle school. It may seem impressive, but really, Chuck just has high standards for his kids.
"Alright, so..." he points to various lines in the notes and draws lots of diagrams, never once giving Anna the answers as she hopes he will every time she asks. He tries to get her to succeed, and though it doesn't go as well as it does for Castiel himself, he's the reason she's doing as well as she is now.
"Hey guys, what's up?" Gabriel asks, barging into Anna's room with a lollipop in his mouth. Where this kid gets his candy from, they'll never know.
"We're mathing," Anna tells him.
"Well, I can tell you aren't Englishing," he laughs, and plops down carelessly on her bed with them, crushing one of her note pages.
"Would you like to math with us?" Anna offers.
"Nah, but I'll watch," he replies.
Castiel sighs. "Gabriel, you're on her notes," he tells his older brother quietly.
Gabriel slides the notes out from under them an picks them up. "Pie-tha-ger-an theorem?"
Casiel frowns, snatching the notes from Gabriel's hand. "It's the Pythagorean Theorem," he corrects him. "You know, a-squared plus b-squared equals c-squared? Same thing you did last year?"
Gabriel shrugs. "Meh, can't really remember what I did last year," he says. "Oh well, have fun doing the python thing!" He skips out of the room as if he doesn't have a care in the world.
"I think you scared him out of here with your big words," Anna laughs.
Castiel shrugs. "If big words can scare him, he deserves to be scared out."Michael sits at the kitchen table, going through college letters with his parents. So far, they've all accepted him. Although he should be happy, he doesn't really seem to care. He knows he has to go to college next year, and all the best colleges in the country are waiting for him. Still, he doesn't really want to go away for college. He likes his family, as chaotic as it always is. He doesn't want to leave them just yet.
"Oh, Harvard accepted you!" Chuck says.
"And Yale!" Amara adds.
"And MIT, and every other Ivy League college in the country," Michael says. "As well as a whole lot of other ones. Yeah, I noticed."
"Well, where are you leaning towards?" Chuck asks.
Michael shrugs. He doesn't even know what he wants to be when he grows up. He's always liked the idea of helping people, and with his grades, doctor has always been in reach. When he was younger, he thought police officer, which would be pretty easy with his athletic history, and in middle school he thought fire fighter, which works out great with his swimming. He can hold his breath for a while. Still, nothing feels right. It's almost as if something is missing.
"Alright, you think about it," Chuck tells him. "You've still got a couple more months before you need to decide anyway."
Michael nods. He didn't realize until he heard people in the halls that you usually pick a favorite college before deciding which ones you'll apply to, so you don't have to worry so much now. His only other senior friend, who happens to also be his brother, Lucifer, has never been too concerned about school, so he wouldn't have known. Maybe Michael should have made some other friends, instead of relying on his brothers' company all the time.
"I'm going to bed," he tells his parents. It's not because he's tired. He just doesn't want to deal with the stress of college. His plan had been took to the room he shares with Lucifer, but walking by his sister's room, he gets distracted. He can tell the guy in the room is Castiel, not because of his voice but because of what he's saying. Only Castiel is so good at math, he is confident enough to tutor his sister. He starts to walk into his room, which happens to be next to hers, but he hears Castiel having trouble explaining something in a way Anna will understand. After a moment of hesitating, Michael turns around and stands in the doorway, not sure if he's welcome.
"Need help?" he offers quietly.
They both look up when they hear his voice. Anna smiles welcomingly at him, but Castiel sits on the bed awkwardly, as if not sure what to do. Michael was used to seeing this from his youngest brother. Castiel is shy in general, but he and Michael, another shy person, rarely talk, so he's especially awkward in his eldest brother's presence.
Anna glances at Castiel, who shrugs to let her know he doesn't mind if she accepts Michael's help. She waves Michael in. "Uh, yeah, actually. How does this work?"
Michael stands at the end of the bed, close enough that he can see the papers but not close enough that he's crowd in his siblings. He starts explaining, and Castiel excuses himself, seeing he is no longer needed. Michael feels bad about it; he didn't mean to make Castiel feel unwanted. He just heard his youngest siblings having trouble and wanted to resolve it. Having siblings is tough. There's really no winning, is there?
