Chapter 18

Sam narrowly misses the pole, ducking at the last second. It flies at him again, so Sam grabs it and takes off running. If Jacob wants a fight, he'll get one, but no one else is dying today; not himself or Jacob. Sam will make sure of it.
Jacob may have longer legs, but Sam's still faster, and he doesn't have to stop running to catch his breath like he's sure Jacob will do. Sam runs out to the woods, but then freezes. Does he want to go in there? Looking in, he doesn't see an ending to it. Maybe he shouldn't go through it. Instead he climbs up the first tree and waits, hidden by the leaves and branches. If Jacob wants to find him, he's going to have to look pretty hard.
"Sam!"
Sam looks around. Did he imagine that? It sounded like Dean. Did Dean find him?
"Sammy!"
That's definitely Dean. Sam jumps out of the tree, leaving his pole behind as he frantically runs towards the faint voice. Sam can't believe it. Dean's here. Sam doesn't have to deal with this anymore. Dean will take care of this; he always does.
"Dean?" Sam calls when he sees Dean pushing his way through the bushes on the other side of a long plain. With him are the four angels.
"Sammy, look out!"
Immediately Sam ducks, not sure what he's looking out for but trusting his brother. Another iron pole flies right above his head, and probably would have taken his head off had Sam kept running and not listened to Dean. Sam turns around and sees Jacob running at him. Immediately Gabriel is by Sam's side. How did that happen? He was just next to Dean.
"Heya, Sam!" Gabriel greets him with a huge grin. Leave it to Gabriel to celebrate at a time like this. "Long time no see."
"Gabriel, what are you-wait, what?" Sam interrupts himself, watching as Jacob is thrown against the side of a house, but there's no one with him.
"What am I doing here?" Gabriel suggests. "How about saving your ass? Oh, don't worry about him; he's fine," Gabriel adds, glancing at Jacob. "You guys aren't the only cool ones here."
"What are you going to do with him?" Sam asks.
Gabriel shrugs. "Not sure yet. What should I do?"
"Let him go," Sam suggests.
"You do realize he just tried to kill you, right?"
"It's not his fault."
"He just tried to decapitate you with a pole!" Gabriel reminds him. "How is that not his fault?"
"Azazel told him to,"
"Who the hell is that?"
"A demon," Sam says. "The one that killed my mother."
Gabriel's face softens, looking at Sam sympathetically. "You saw it?" Sam just nods. "Did you kill it?"
Sam shakes his head. "It's a demon; you can't kill a demon. But I couldn't exorcise it. I should have done it sooner. I should have done something. I shouldn't have let it go."
"Hey, Sam, it's okay," Gabriel says assuringly. "We'll get it sometime. Together. Okay?"
Sam nods once. "Yeah," he chokes out. Now that the danger's over and the adrenaline is gone, the events of the day are finally catching up to him. He fights back tears, trying to be strong like he knows Dean would be. Gabriel puts his arms around Sam in a big hug, and Sam buries his head in Gabriel's shoulder, grateful to have such an awesome friend.
"Sam, what happened? Are you okay?" Dean asks, now standing with the two friends.
Gabriel releases Sam, who turns and faces his brother. He tries to look brave, knowing that's what Dean expects. It's what everyone expects.
"Yeah," Sam lies. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"What happened?"
Sam explains everything, from his sudden appearance here to meeting the others, and everyone's special abilities. He finishes by saying, "And the demon that did this killed Mom."
Dean's eyes go wide at that. "Did you exorcise it?"
Sam shakes his head. "I tried. I really did, but I couldn't. I'm sorry, Dean."
"Where is it?" Dean asks, his mind set on it's destruction rather than his brother's situation.
"I-I don't know," Sam admits.
"What do you mean, you don't know?" Dean demands angrily. "How do you not know?"
"Woah, Dean, lay off the kid," Gabriel interrupts.
"How about you stay out of this?" Dean counters.
"And if you stop yelling at him, I will," Gabriel says. "He just got kidnapped and nearly decapitated in a matter of hours. Cut him some slack."
Dean begins to retaliate, but Sam walks away before he does. He can't deal with this right now. These two are his favorite people; his best friends. He can't listen to them arguing, especially over him.
"Sam!" Dean shouts at his brother, but he keeps walking.
Gabriel teleports to his side. "Hey, Sam, don't leave." Sam doesn't say anything, so Gabriel keeps talking, staying right by his friend's side. "Come on, smile! It's over! We found you. Now we can go home again. Yay!"
"It's not over," Sam tells him.
Gabriel looks around. "Uh, it's very over. See? Nothing's happening."
Sam shakes his head. "As long as Azazel lives, it won't be over. He'll come back; I'm sure of it."
"Well, then, I guess we'll just have to find him, won't we?" Gabriel puts his hands on Sam's shoulders to stop him. "We'll take care of this. We all will. But for now, we should go home and take it easy."
Sam looks down at his friend, grateful he's there with him. "Okay," he agrees finally.
Gabriel puts the palm of his hand on Sam's forehead, and suddenly, they're both back at the motel.
"See?" Gabriel says as he sits on the couch. "Everything is back to normal." Sam sits on the couch next to Gabriel, who puts his arm around him protectively.
"Thank you," Sam says finally. "For everything."
Gabriel smiles. "No problem, Samster," he says, a smile on his face. He rests his head on Sam's shoulder, and Sam lays his head on top of Gabriel's, and they just sit together, glad that with everything that's wrong in their crazy world, they still have each other.

Castiel watches from a distance as Dean talks to Sam, and even from as far away as he is, he knows their conversation is not going well. Sam storms off, and Gabriel goes after him, finally bringing him away. Castiel is sure they're back at the motel now; where else would Sam want to go? Gabriel would bring Sam wherever be thought Sam wanted to go, and though Sam doesn't have a real home, that's as close as he's got, so odds are, that's where he wants to be.
Dean doesn't go after his brother. He stands right where Sam left him and watches silently, not moving once Sam and Gabriel have left. It's almost as if Dean is waiting for them to return, or maybe it's the opposite. Maybe he doesn't want to see Sam again now. Castiel doesn't know.
"We should probably go..." Michael says finally.
"Yeah," Anna agrees.
"You two go," Castiel says. "Back to the house," he adds, thinking Sam and Gabriel probably want to be alone at the motel. "I'm going to check on Dean."
Anna leaves, and after an approving nod, Michael does the same. Hesitantly, Castiel walks up to Dean. Although Dean must see him coming, he doesn't say anything.
"Hi," Castiel says awkwardly. Why does everything have to be awkward for him? "Are you okay?" Dean doesn't respond. "What happened? I thought you'd want to stay with Sam."
"It was here," Dean tells him, still staring into the field where Sam and Gabriel left.
"What was here?" Castiel asks.
Dean looks up at him finally. "The demon. The one that killed my mother."
Castiel's eyes go wide as he realizes how big is a deal this is. He doesn't bother to as if it's gone; Dean would be celebrating if it was. That explains why Dean is standing all alone; Dean doesn't want to face the one who let it get away.
"I'm sorry, Dean," Castiel says finally, not sure what else he can say. "Is there anything I can do for you?"
"Just... Don't leave me," he murmurs.
Castiel nods. He would never leave Dean; not like this. He'll stay as long as Dean wants him to. If it was up to him, he's never leave.

A/N: The end! I hope you enjoyed it! I know I did! I tried to make the ending kinda cute with the subtle shipping. If I make a sequel (which I hope I do) I'll make it cuter with the couple-y stuff. Anyway, thanks for reading! Feel free to check out my other stories as well!
