20. You came back.
Whenever Tony leaves for a mission it isn't saying goodbye to him that's the hardest part. The goodbye is a lot easier, you both know that it could possibly the last time you see each other so you make sure to say I love you. If he does die, Tony wants to die knowing that he told you how much you mean to him and you need him to know you love him before he leaves.
No, the hardest part is waiting.
Waiting.
Waiting to find out if he's coming back exactly the way he left, or if he's coming back injured. If he's coming back at all. If there's anyone left at the tower, though they try, their words do nothing to quell the worry that rips through you. When you're alone, when there's no one to try and distract your mind, you manage to imagine all the worst possible scenarios. So its usually a major relief when he comes home and he's relatively ok.
Finally after three days of emotionally draining thoughts, you are broken out of them by voices drifting into the room. Your eyes find him instantly, running over and giving him a once over before deciding it's definitely safe to hug him without causing any pain. You wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him close and pressing your face into his chest.
"You came back." He places a kiss on top of your head and mumbles back. "I came back."
Yes, waiting is definitely the hardest part.
