Chapter 20

One week later, I sat at my desk, bouncing my leg and tapping my pen against my desk. At first I wasn't nervous about meeting Shawn's family, but now I am. I mean, in the several months that we've known each other, he's had dinner with my family multiple times, yet he's never really mentioned his. All I really know is that he has two sisters and a brother, and he's the youngest out of them all.
His family is arriving today, around 6:30 pm. Then, when I get off of work, I have to head to his house to prepare dinner for all of us. I'm not really worried about her not liking me, since it's not like I'm gonna be her daughter in law anyway. But, I guess I just hope she'll be okay with this whole thing. I want to at least have a decent relationship with the grandmother of my child.

I only stayed half the day. I needed to get to Shawn's house sooner rather than later. I have to cook for seven, and I still need ingredients for dinner tonight.
"Solange, I'm heading out." I said to her as I started to leave.
"Good luck."
I smiled as a way of saying thanks, and continued to slowly leave the building. For dinner, I was making Cornish hens, rosemary potatoes, green beans, and rolls. Not too fancy, but still time consuming. I wanted to at least have the chicken and potatoes in the oven by the time they got here.
Shawn was still home when I got there after finishing the grocery shopping, and he started to help me prep before he had to head out.

"What all exactly have you told your family?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Really just that you're pregnant. I didn't say that we're together or anything."
"Did you specifically say that we're not together?"
He shook his head and softly sighed. "No."
I started to ask him why not, but I figured why bother. I guess they'll just find out tonight if they want to know.
Soon, he left to pick them up, and I buried myself with preparing dinner. Just as I was hoping, I was able to have everything in the oven or on the stove by the time they were pulling into the driveway.
I watched from the window as they all stepped out of the car. My heart raced in my chest, and I felt my baby start to kick. I looked down at my belly and smiled. "You don't need to be nervous. I'm sure they'll love you." As if it heard me, the kicking slowed down. I sighed to myself as they came closer to the door. "Here we go..."

"Here we are..." Shawn smiled and walked through the front door, carrying with him his mother's and sister's bags. He set them down, then smiled in my direction. "Mom, this is Beyoncé. Bey, this is my family."
I smiled and nervously said hello, and his mother smiled.
"Oh, honey don't be shy!" She walked right up to me and pulled me into her arms. I was shocked, to say the least. I mean, of course I wanted our first meeting to be nice, but I honestly wasn't expecting her to immediately like me.
After hugging me, she backed up and looked me up and down. "Well, you certainly are the prettiest girl Shawn has ever introduced us to, although I wish he had introduced us sooner." She cast a glance in his direction, as did I. It was obvious that she was under the impression that we are together. "I'm Gloria," she said, turning back to me, "This is my eldest son, James, and my twins Jasmine and Michelle." I was greeted with hugs from Shawn's sisters as well, but his brother only nodded in my direction.

"Well, it's nice to meet all of you. Dinner will be done soon, so I'll be in the kitchen if you need me-"
"Oh, honey we can help you with dinner." Ms. Gloria offered. I tried to tell her that she didn't have to, that she was a guest, but she insisted, and also refuted being a guest in her son's home. So Ms. Gloria and the twins all came along with me into the kitchen to help finish dinner. I silently thanked God that it was going well so far.

Bey, my mom, and my sister's all went into the kitchen, and I just smiled after them. Mostly after Bey. I know she was nervous, and hell I was too, but I'm glad my family took to her so well, it's not usual that they do. James and I stayed behind in the living room.
"So, how'd you two meet?" He asked as he sat on the couch.
I sank down onto the opposite seat next to him. "Actually, we met in a club," I answered. It's funny to remember our first meeting, it seemed like such a long time ago.
He raised his brows. "A club? She's one of them girls?"
I frowned. "What? No, that's the only time I'd ever seen her in a club. I don't think she really goes out. She was just having a girls night, or something."
His face was held in a frown as well. "What are her friends like?"
I shrugged. I didn't really know much about her friends outside of work. "I don't really know them. Why?"
