Chapter 22

A half hour later, we were arriving to the hospital. Shawn drove, and the entire time, I stayed in the back seat with my sister while she had her contractions. We called her doctor on the way, and they said that they would get everything set up while we were on route. Shawn drove us to the entrance, where a nurse was waiting on us. She helped me get my sister out of the car, and Shawn went to park the car.
"Okay, Ms. Knowles, I just need you to keep breathing, all right?" My sister nodded her head as tears rolled down her face. I followed behind the nurse who wheeled her into her room, and my first instinct was to stop at the door.
"Are you coming in?" The nurse asked me.
I hesitated. I didn't really know if I should. But then my sister begged me to be in the room with her. She didn't want to be alone.

So I followed them in, but I stood away as they helped her into the bed. She had another contraction, and the nurse held her hand and helped her breathe through it. Once her contraction finished, they checked to see how dilated she was. She wasn't very far along, so they planned to give her some medication to calm her down.
Thirty minutes later, everything finally calmed down. She got her medication, and she was now calmly laying in the bed, not even noticing her intensifying contractions.
"You feeling better?" I spoke for the first time since we had gotten here.
She nodded and sleepily blinked her eyes. "Where's Shawn?"
"He's out in the waiting room. He couldn't come back with everything going on."
She let out a small grunt and closed her eyes again. "Do you think I should call Terrance?"
I shrugged even though she wasn't looking at me. "I don't know, I guess if you want to."
"Could you?"
I really didn't want to, but I nodded. "Sure."

Back in the waiting room, Shawn was sitting and watching the tv. When he saw me coming towards him, he stood up.
"Hey, is she okay?"
"Yeah. They gave her the epidural, so now she's kind of in and out." I paused. "She wants me to call Terrance."
He nodded his head. "Yeah, I think it would be good for him to be here."
"Maybe..."
"Hey," I looked up at him. "It'll be okay."
I nodded. "I'm gonna go ahead and call everyone." He let me go just after giving me a quick kiss on the cheek.

Terrance seemed confused at first. It was almost like he had completely forgotten that his soon to be ex-wife was pregnant with his child. A part of me honestly didn't think he would care all that much, since he doesn't seem to care about anything else, but he swore he would be here as soon as possible. I also called the rest of the family to let them know. My parents are out of the country for their honeymoon right now, but they promised to be on the first flight out to get here too. Solange was on her way with Paris as soon as I hung up.
"Well, everyone's gonna get here as soon as possible." I said once I returned to Shawn.
"That's good." He smiled. "You know, I think it's a really good thing you're doing by being here for your sister, even after everything the two of you have been through."
I nodded. "Yeah, I just figure she'll need all the support she can get. I mean, I'm sure she feels kind of alone right now."
"Um, speaking of support," he started. "Would it make you upset if I bought your sister a sort of...push present, or something?"
I was a little taken aback by his question. Not because it upset me, but because I thought the gesture was genuinely very sweet of him. It actually made me smile. "No, go ahead. I actually really appreciate you doing that. And I really appreciate you asking how I would feel about it."
He smiled back. "Great. But don't worry, whatever I get her, I promise I'll get you an even better present."
I laughed. "You don't have to buy me a push present. I just want you to be there."
"I will." He said as he took both of my hands in his, then he kissed my forehead after he spoke.

Within an hour of calling them, my sisters arrived, then several hours later, almost at midnight, Larren began to push. It was just the four of us in the room, and Shawn stayed out in the waiting room almost the entire time. He only left to pick us up some dinner around 5:00, but Larren couldn't eat until after the baby was born. Terrance still hadn't showed up by the time she started pushing, and I think that really got to her. She acted like she didn't care, but I know she's hurting emotionally as well. It was probably also that much harder on her that our mother wasn't there either.
When Larren's son was born, it was the first time, I think, that the four of us really experienced such a moment of closeness. Larren and I were both there when Jules was born, of course, but Paris was too young atp that time to experience that. It was the first time that all four of us had been together for the birth of a family member, and there wasn't a dry eye in the room.
He was absolutely beautiful, and I couldn't stop sobbing. We sent pictures to everyone, and we spent a half hour just awing over him. It only made me more anxious to meet my baby too.
