Ikira

“Let’s see what you got there, kid!” I came upon the small group of wolves as Tsume happily barked towards me. I couldn’t help but smile sheepishly at him, still feeling a little strange about him after our little “disagreement”. The other members chuckled at his comment.

I realized soon that most of the hunters consisted of teens or young adults. I thought maybe they only allowed the younger and athletic members to do the hunting. I walked into the group, and I was greeted by another familiar face.

“Hello again,” a mockingly seductive voice said. I looked over to see Hige with a goofy grin.

“We meet again, I see.” I could see that my presence was making his tail wag more than usual. I couldn’t help but feel amused at the sight I was seeing.

A calm, strong voice spoke from behind us, “Now, Hige. I didn’t assign her here just for you to flirt with her.” Kiba came upon the group, head held high as Alphas had to do so.

Wolves/people alike were getting excited, skipping about in their places. I guess that as soon as the leader came, it was getting closer to time to hunt.

“All right everyone, settle down. Okay, here’s the whole deal! Now, far into the eastern border, we had reports this noon that there was a herd of elk roaming,” This caused a few whoops and barks to erupt. Kiba couldn’t help but roll his eyes and sigh.

“And it seems as if they haven’t moved. With this opportunity, I thought we could invite our new member of the pack, Ikira.” I felt as if my whole body would squeeze into a little ball. All eyes were on me, and more cheers rippled across the group.

Kiba continued, “So, let’s give her a welcome with a successful hunt!” With that, he skidded to his left and flashed into his wolf. It was surprisingly the first time I saw his form, a big powerful white creature with piercing yellow eyes. He looked over to us and gave a firm ‘ruff’, and soon all the us changed into our forms in unison. Exhilaration flew, jumped, and bolted in my veins.

The wind was on our side. The bushes covered every trace of our identity to the herd. I looked to the plains, seeing that the elk were still munching away at the grass, unaware of the danger yards away.

I looked over to my side and saw my team. They were all concentrated at the prize ahead. From what I picked up from the commands, I was a part of a massive and complex plan. The hunting patrols were organized into three teams.

The first were the “eyes”, whose jobs were to track the location of the prey and find the perfect spots to observe and attack. They had to calculate the wind, distance, terrain, and so much more to make the hunts successful.

Then there were the hunters themselves. They were the ones who had to target the animals themselves, chase it down, and have enough strength to bring them down. But if they were to struggle, there were the “herders”, whom their name can self-describe that. But one thing was for sure, all the wolves had to chase and put their teeth into the prey.

I was, surprisingly, a part of the hunters. Kiba assigned me to this team and explained that I looked to be the type that “can run fast”. I didn’t complain, excited to have the more fun job of the hunt.

The wolves I was with all looked to the left side. At an angle to our location were a clutter of thick brush and small trees. In there, you could barely spot the keen eyes of wolves watching intently at the herd.

/Wind’s gonna pick up. Gotta stay low to the plains if it, by any chance, changes direction./

/Copy that. Permission to advance?/
