"Are we there yet?" Asked Ruby grumpily. They had been walking for hours and Ruby was starting to lose her patience.
Carson was no longer angry, but he was grumpy, which was a big problem for Ruby. It turned out that he had forgotten where the village was, so he had to sniff it out. Besides making him tired it also stressed him out since it was "a completely unacceptable thing for a werewolf like him to forget where he comes from."
Ruby thought he was being exaggerated – but what was there to do? Anyways, she was used to putting up with these things after spending all those days with Carson."Are we there yet?" Asked Ruby once more, raising her voice a little more so that Carson wouldn't ignore her this time.
"I'm trying to concentrate here." Was his answer. He was smelling a stone, and Ruby had to admit he looked stupid.
"Can't I help or something? All I've been doing is walking behind you without–"
"Shhh! I think I found something."
Carson had now picked up the stone and was smelling it very closely.
"What are you doing?"
"Shut. Up."
He continued looking at it with his eye as though he had supervision of something.
"Carson!" Cried Ruby, making him snap his head in her direction. "You look ridiculous!"
There was a small pause. Carson looked at her – Ruby looked back at him – and he fell to the floor.
"I'm desperate." Carson muttered, closing his eyes.
Ruby let out a short snort.
"What are you laughing at?" Carson asked grumpily.
"Nothing." Ruby smiled.
Carson rolled his eyes and continued pitying himself.
"You know what? No." Ruby stomped right next to him and gripped his arm, making him look up at her confused. "Carson Webber, you are getting up right now."
He continued looking at her with a confused face.
"Get up! Now!"
Fumbling with his jacket – not knowing what happened to calm, sweet Ruby – Carson stood up as if his life depended on it.
"Okay - okay, I'm up."
"We've been hours... Hours trying to find this stupid village! And what have you been doing? Smelling a stone? No! That's not how it's done! We are going to find this village properly, and together. So, Carson, you are letting me help you like it or not. And we are getting to that village, and we are getting back to your family."
Ruby ended with her index finger right on Carson's face, and one red brow lifted up in her forehead.
"Okay... Okay." Carson let out a soft laugh.
"Don't laugh!" Cried Ruby hitting his arm.
"Fine!" Carson put up his arms in surrender. "I'll teach you to sniff."
"To sniff? To sniff? That sounds stupid!!"
"Calm down!" Said Carson laughing.
"Calm down? I won't calm down! Look at where I am! I went from an antisocial little freak to a freaking werewolf in the middle of the woods!"
"A what?"
"Who cares!"
Now both of them were laughing, clearly realising that they were talking nonsense.
"Okay. Okay." Said Carson calming himself down. "Seriously. We have to find the village. Otherwise it will get late and we do not want to meet up with those rogues again."
"Yeah, you're right. Cmon. Let's start."Surprisingly, it took Ruby about ten minutes to get the hang of sniffing. Carson expected her to take half an hour or something. They decided to start looking for the village again after a short rest. It turned out that sniffing out the village was a lot easier with Ruby's help. Besides, instead of smelling stupid things like stones, Ruby focused more on the air, trying to sense the scent of a werewolf. (Eventually Carson switched to that too.)
After twenty minutes they finally realised something was different in the air. At first Carson started smelling with a louder noise. Ruby looked at him and started smelling more carefully. Carson looked back at her with the same face Ruby was using to look at him – 'something's up'. They didn't break the eye-contact – both of them kept smelling trying to identify the smell. Suddenly Carson snapped.
"It's food."
"Food?"
"Food! But a special one – it's a recipe made by us werewolves only. We're getting close!"
"Really?"
"Yes!"
"Finally!"
Ruby felt like screaming at the top of her lungs, but held it in. She only squealed to herself.
They kept walking and smelling – the location becoming clearer with each step they took.
