Sam and Jared strapped their shin guards and arm guards on. They had become such good friends in so short time. I wondered how they did that. It took me at least a couple of weeks for a true friend to develop.
"Match 36 up next."
Jared and Sam looked at each other, excitement radiating off of their faces. They both walked up to the mat and waited for the previous match to finish.
From the corner of my eye I saw Charlie in the door. What was she doing here? I walked up to her, struggling through the crowds of clubs trying to train.
"Charlie, what are you doing here?"
"Oh, um, I came here to watch."
"Really, um, come sit over with the club. Jared and Sam are next to fight."
We strode over to the seating area and sat down next to my Dad.
"Dad this is Charlie. We were stuck in the principal's office together."
"Oh yes I remember you. The principal's daughter."
The speaker read out the scores of the last match and then Jared and Sam stepped up onto the mat.
"Crap we gotta coach." I said to Dad and we both put on a bib and took our place on the coach's seat. I sat on Jared's side and Dad sat on Sam's side.
The umpire signalled to start and they began to kick.
"COUNTER! COUNTER!" I screamed at Jared over the cries of spectators.
At the end of the first round I sat Jared down on the chair and gave him his drink bottle. "Get in there. Sam is taller than you so try and get closer. Also use your strengths. Back kicks could be a good option. Head kicks should be more regular too. Know go and do all of that at once." I said patting Jared on the back.
Second round started and Jared started to get ahead. The final score was 12-8 Jared's win.
"Well done." I hugged Jared and let him go over to Charlie. She congratulated him and they started talking.
It was now time for my fight. The girl I had to fight first was nowhere to be seen as I stepped up to the mat with Dad. Jo and Mia were also supposed to be here, but they hadn't showed up yet.
I stepped onto the mat and faced Lucilla. Her face had the expression of a piranha. "Lulu, remember to turn your aggression on." My Dad whispered in my ear. First we bowed and then put our head guards on. The umpire signalled his hand to start and my feet moved out of the way while Lucilla attacked. Panicking, I threw a head kick. That probably wasn't a good idea as it made her more angry. She then kicked me in the side and I went falling down to the ground, clutching my ankle.
Dad came straight to me with the medical guy and looked at it. "Definitely sprained." the medical guy said and Dad helped me limp off. Unfortunately I had to forfeit, leaving Lucilla the winner. Although I did come second leaving me still able to go to nationals.
For the rest of the day I sat there with a ice pack wrapped around my ankle. Mian and Jo finally turned up and we went home with Sam.
