title: Avoid (Part 2)

word count:  1274

It had been two weeks and Draco was still avoiding you like you had a nasty disease.

You hated it. Every time you wanted to go and talk to him, if it would be in the hallways or after the lessons, he would look at you for a few seconds with that strange glare of him before turning around and walking away. And every time again it broke your heart a little. What had you done wrong?

You had thought about it time and time again. Was it something you had said? Something you had done without realising? But every time you closed your eyes and searched your mind for reasons, you ended up blank.

Your friends from Gryffindor told you it was better this way. That he was an 'stuck up Slytherin Prince' and that he wasn't worth your time if he wouldn't even look at you. But they had never liked him anyways, and besides; they didn't even know him like you did.

You and Draco had grown up together and had been friends since you could talk. You knew Draco could be a prick sometimes, but he also had a sweet and caring side. It was a side not many people got to know and you felt special for being one of those few who did. Even when you two were placed into different houses, you being a brave Gryffindor and him being a cunning Slytherin, you had remained friends. And you had hoped that wouldn't change, but it had. And you were determined to figure out why.

Fifteen days after the incident in the Great Hall, you were walking through one of Hogwarts many hallways. It was evening and you were late for dinner because you had to finish your potions homework, that had been way too long. But being a good student, you had finished your homework and now you were walking towards the dinner, you stomach rumbling as you thought about the many delicious threads you would face soon.

You were so deep in your thoughts about chicken, pudding and potatoes that you didn't notice another figure approaching you from the shadowy hallway, not far away from you. Sadly enough, that person wasn't paying attention too and before you knew you had bumped into each other.

"Ouch! Son of a-"

"Watch out you filthy-"

The both of you stopped talking midsentence at the same time as you caught each other's eye. You could feel your breath hitch in your throat as you looked into the sharp, grey eyes of your blonde friend. 'Or former blonde friend,' you thought bitterly.

When seeing you, Draco's eyes immediately grew big and you saw that look appear on his face again. That look like he was admiring a pretty artefact in a shop in Hogsmeade before it turned into a pained and vague one.

"Draco! I-"

"Excuse me," He mumbled, casting his eyes down to the floor. Before you could respond, he had already turned around again and had walked passed you to walk away with hurried steps. You felt a sting of pain go through your heart as you watched the boy walk away, his shoulders slumped. But soon afterwards that pain was replaced with anger. How dared he! How dared he to act like you weren't even there! Two weeks you had decided to give him some time to talk to you out of his own, but without success. And now you had had enough.

Turning around quickly, you started to run towards the direction the Slytherin Prince had disappeared to. Luckily, he hadn't walked off too far and you could still see his silhouette walk a few metres in front of you.

"Draco!" You cried out, causing him to freeze in his tracks. You saw how his body tensed, but he didn't turn around and you hurried to stand in front of him.

"How dare you!" You spat, finally facing him after so many days. You saw a flash of pain appear his eyes for a small second when he heard your angry tone, but decided to ignore it. After all, it had been you who had felt that pain the last few days. Now it was his turn.

"Draco Lucius Malfoy," You started, your voice calm but dangerously low. Draco flinched on hearing you speak his full name and his eyes started to search the hallway for a way to get out of this. But you didn't let him

"What do you think you are doing?" You asked him, trying to catch his eye despite his tries to avoid your gaze. You were slightly surprised by his reaction, like he was almost...scared of you.

"I don't know where you are talking about," Draco muttered, his voice sounding strangly calm and distant. You frowned and clenched your hands to fists, trying to resist the urge to hit him.

"Excuse me? How do you mean 'I don't know where you are talking about'? I think you know exactly what I meant! Why have you been avoiding me for the last two damn weeks like I am invisible?"

Draco sighted. He tried to act nonchalant, like he didn't care, but from the inside it was ripping him apart. He needed to get away from this, before he ended up hurting the both of you even more. He knew what he had done. He also had seen the pain in your eyes every time he had turned his back to you, every time he had ignored your questioning voice, and he had felt the exact same pain. But he also knew he couldn't do any different. It was better this way. If he would let you in, you would only end up with a broken heart. A heart he wouldn't be able to repair and didn't want to break in the first place.

You in the meantime where standing in front of him with a sharp gaze, your hands on your hips to prevent him from walking around you that easily. Draco finally managed to look you in your (e/c) eyes with a bored glare in his own silver ones.

"Is it really that important to you?" He sneered, his voice implying that there were a thousand things he would prefer doing over this talk. He felt a pang of guilt when he saw your expression change to one of pain and he almost apologised. He wanted to avoid having to act like an asshole, but it was his only option now.

"...Isn't it to you?" You asked him, in a small voice this time. Draco shook his head.

"Don't see why it would be. Friendships change, nothing you can do about it."

With one last, cold glare he slipped past you, nudging you softly but accidently with his elbow. You instead, froze in your tracks. His words broke your heart. 'Nothing you can do about it,' he had said. Didn't he care about you? Was he really the stuck up Slytherin your friends had told you he was?

Slowly you turned around, just in time to see him walking around the corner, his form disappearing into the darkness. You could feel a cold tear slip down your face, but you didn't do any effort to wipe it away. Instead, you slowly started to walk back to the direction you had come from, not bothering to go to the Great Hall anymore. Tonight you had to be alone.

What you didn't notice though, were the tears that were also sliding down Draco's face as he hurried back to the Slytherin dorm, as he felt like a monster and hoped that he would never have to hurt you like this again.
