"Are you sure you're not worried about getting into trouble" you asked as you and James walked through the empty halls of Hogwarts late at night.
"We both know that I get into a lot of trouble already" James laughed "I'm kind of use to it".
You couldn't help but laugh too.
You and James walked around the school late at night often. Being in Hufflepuff you didn't get to spend as much time with James as you liked. Not to mention when you were alone with James he was... different. He wasn't the cocky jerk everyone thought he was. You could actually have a real conversation with him.
You thought it was sweet James was willing to break the rules just so he could talk to you. You were a prefect yourself and had to do patrols anyway so you had nothing to worry about.
"So how about that Transfiguration test we had today?" James asked "how'd you do?".
"McGonagall said I did really well" you grinned "and you?".
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you" James chuckled messing up his already messy black hair.
"Try me?".
"It sounds crazy but McGonagall said it looked like I aced it".
"Wow that's fantastic" you paused and raised an eyebrow "why did you think I wouldn't believe you?".
"Because I'm dumb".
"You're not dumb" you said giving him a playful shove making James grin.
"People think you're stupid" you continued "but you're not. You're actually really smart".
James' didn't say anything but he did smile. His eyes had a hint of happiness in them. You could tell it's been a while since someone's said something like that to him.
"I don't deserve you you know" James suddenly said making you give him a strange look.
"What?".
"You're too nice to me" James went on "and I'm a dumb jerk".
"No" you said stopping him in the middle of the hall "not around me you're not anyway. You're sweet. I mean no other guy has offered to break the rules just so they could talk to me".
James smiled.
"Hey it's my pleasure".
