"Sam, hurry up! You're gorgeous as it is. I've got a good buzz, and I don't want it to wear off before we get to the party."
"I'm coming. I'm coming," Sam groans from the bathroom. I hear the hairspray bottle slam on the bathroom counter and the door hit against the wall as she hurries out to the living room.
"I love that shirt! It always makes your boobs look good." I say as I grab my purse from the couch and open the front door.
"Am I showing too much? You know I'm not that type." She grimaces as she pulls her top up trying to hide any cleavage.
"Ugh. Stop that." I groan, grabbing her hand and pull her out the door. "It's fine the way it is. Tanner is waiting for us in the truck."
Tanner is Sam's boyfriend. They've been dating since high school and are the epitome of the perfect couple. Samantha is gorgeous with her long, blonde and wavy hair, blue eyes and petite stature. Tanner is tall and muscular with dark hair and brown eyes usually seen wearing a baseball cap. He adores her, and you could tell just by the way his face lights up when she crawls in the middle seat beside him.
"Hey sweetheart! You look beautiful as always, but you know you don't have to take so long to get that way," Tanner says, hinting at his impatience. He puts the truck in drive and peels out of the driveway just as anxious to get to the party as I was. Sam isn't the party girl. She only goes because all the girls in her sorority go. Not to mention, her boyfriend plays baseball for the university. She basically has an obligation to show up.
Me, on the other hand, partying is a way of life. I am way too social to waste too much time in the library. I tried. I really did, but I've always been more interested in being where the party was. I do just enough to stay on top of my grades; meaning, I memorize the material the night before a test. Not exactly your teacher's pet.
As Tanner pulls down the dirt road which leads to a gated logging road, he hits a dip in the road and I go flying across the backseat. "Shit, Tanner, watch out where you're going. Bruised ass cheeks aren't sexy."
"Sorry," he speaks sarcastically. "There ain't gonna be anything left of the fire if we don't hurry. You girls took way too long getting ready."
"Blame it on your--. Ouch! Shit, Tanner. Come on with the potholes." I complain, making me lose my train of thought.
"Guys. We're almost there. Would ya just stop complaining already?" It's the first thing Sam has said since getting in the truck.
Tanner hit a muddy patch in the road and fishtails it around a corner. Then, slamming on the breaks, he misses the other vehicles lined down the dirt drive. Relieved we were finally parked, I throw the door open, feeling much more buzzed than I had been twenty minutes ago. I slowly climb out of the truck so I wouldn't face plant in the mud.
"HEYYY! There they are," cries everyone around the fire as we walked up.
"We thought you got lost or hit a deer," Silas motions at us with his beer in hand. I jump up on the tailgate beside him and grab his beer for myself. "Hey now, you may be a pretty little thing, but go get your own!" Silas was the big teddy bear of the bunch. He hits on anything with two legs, but is as sweet as sugar once you get to know him.
Sam is snuggled in Tanner's lap by the fire sitting in a fold up chair. Sam doesn't drink, but Tanner had already popped the top on a Bud Light.
About thirty people were sitting on tailgates, lawn chairs, or snuggled up in the backseat somewhere. Ashlyn, Katherine, and Nina are laughing while mixing up their drinks on Chris's tailgate when Jeremy comes and wraps his arms around Katherine. He is so drunk already that he spills his beer on Nina. "What the hell, Jeremy? Get your drunk ass outta here. Now I smell like piss from your nasty beer."
