Are You Okay?

Chapter Seven

Tomika POV

Today Freddy, Summer, Lawrence, Jaele, Mr. Finn, and myself-Jozie moved a month after Zack left-were going to try Zack's again.

We promised each other about three months ago that every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday we would go to the Mooneyham's and try to get some more information on Zack's disappearance.

As you can guess, it hasn't gone all to well. Whenever we show up, Mr. M either says Zack isn't home or is busy. No matter how many times we beg him to let us see Zack, the answer's still the same, no. Even though we've never been successful, we always go back.

Summer reached a pale hand towards the pitch black door when it was suddenly thrown open.

Standing in the door of his house was no other than Zachary Mooneyham himself. Zack stood shock still like a deer caught in headlights as he glazed at the band through his bangs. It took all of my strength to resist brushing his hair out of his eyes, but I managed to keep it under control.

I snapped out of my thoughts and realized Zack wasn't the only one not moving. The band was staring-no glaring- at Zack, keeping their mouths pushed into a tight line. We all stood like that for a second before the darkness came to out faces, stopping inches away from my nose. I looked down and saw that Freddy had stopped the door from closing with his shoe.

"What are you doing?" He asked, nudging the door all the way open with his foot. Then, before Zack could react, the whole band pushed into the Mooneyham's house.

Letting out a sigh, Zack closed the door behind us and lead us to one of his many livingrooms. The band quickly took seats, exhausted from the walk to here. I eyed Zack as he paced back and forth, not even giving the couches a glance-though it seemed as if he was about to pass out.
For what seemed like hours, he walked to the T.V. then to the couch and over and over again.

Finally, after awhile of this, Jaele jumped to her feet.

"WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN!?!" She roared, causing Zack to flinch.

"Wh-what do you mean?" He asked, nervously.

I jumped to my feet too, joining in the discussion.

"She means, how come you've just disappeared?"

"I-I haven't. Father just decided to home school me for now on. He hired this really good teacher."

Father? When did that happen? What is going on with him?

"How come you've stopped answering our calls and texts?" Lawrence asked.

"I dropped my phone in the toilet."

Lies, I thought.

"How come you never tried getting them?" Summer asked.

"I've been busy."

With what?

"So you just decided to ditch us like that!?! Why would you do that! We're all supposed to be in this together!"
Mr. Finn accused.

Pain and guilt flashed on Zack's face, though was gone in a matter of seconds.

"You don't need me, you have Jaele." The words came out so quiet, I didn't believe them at first.

"What do you mean?" Summer asked.

"Of course we need you." Freddy said.

"You're a better guitarist than me." Jaele murmured.

"Not really, you guys are great. Like I said, you don't need me, you can find another guitarist easily."

He didn't hear Jaele?

"Zac-"

"C-can you guys just go? I kind of have work to do." He cut me off, practically telling us to get out.

"Zack, come on man, what's going on?" Mr. Finn took two steps closer to him, though stopped when Zack started backing up.

"Zack."

Freddy walked up to his bestfriend, but unlike our teacher, he didn't stop. Eventually, Zack was up against the far wall, trying to push into it to get farther away from Freddy.

"Zack?" That was a different voice, though my mind couldn't comprehend who said it.

Freddy gingerly placed his hand on Zack's shoulder and looking like he'd been slapped after the small whimper escaped Zack's mouth.

Freddy's eyes grew large at the noise.

"What's going on?" He demanded.
