Me and my sister had gone through thick and thin together. Scarlett and I always found a way to survive. She basically lead me around. Every time we came across a problem, she'd be the one to kill or solve it. I was always to scared to pull the trigger. She didn't blame me though.
She was 6 years older then me, so she knew what mom and dad were like. Sometimes when we stopped for a night, she would tell me stories of what they were like. She told me She couldn't figure out how she took care of me when all the parents disappeared.
She said it was a living Hell. When we got older, she learned how to read, then she taught me. Once she learned how to read, she would read books on how to care for kids, how to grow food, how to make clothes, and can food. "Tell me winter, did Molly ever teach you how to change a diaper?" I ask while giggling. "No, I cant say she ever got down to it." He said giggling back.
I fought with her all the time about having to learn stuff like that. Every time I argued with her about that stuff, She would say the same thing. "Its better to be prepared." I really couldn't think of anything to say to her when she said that. I even spent nights awake trying to think of what I could say or come back at her with when she said that. Nothing came to me though.
I would hate it when she said that, but I knew she was right every time. One day, we decided to go to a new location, a new home. The place we were staying at the time was a hotspot for blackouts. We were looking one day and found an amazing house that sat on top of a mountain cliff that overlooked the entire city. We lived on our version of the top of the world. It was beautiful. We lived there for about 3 years. It was our happy little version of home.
We would get attempted raids on us by reapers, but Scarlett had that revolver of hers and would send them back to the rat hole that they crawled out of. Winter pulls out a revolver from the side of his pants and hands it to me. "Where did you find this stuff?" I ask, beggining to tear up again.
"When I was hunting, I found them wrapped up in a suit made of leaves." Winter replies. "Turn the picture around Lucy." Winter said. I turn the picture around to find a text "Your next Lucy!!!" It said. "What?" I ask. "What does that mean lucy?" Winter asks. "I don't know." I say. "The reapers, their looking for you. They've already found us. I found it not far from the house." He said.
"They've come to finish the job winter." I say, with no hope in my voice. "What do you mean?" Winter asks. "I have to tell him the rest of the story." I think to myself. One day, me and Scarlett pack some stuff and go on a salvage run. We were really low on food and medical supplies. We move into the city and go into a military surplus store by the bridge.
The first thing I do when I get there is go to the back and start packing canned food and med packs. "Hey Lucy!" Scarlett yells. "Yeah?" I yell back. "I'm gonna make you something!" She said. I stayed silent. I was happy. Scarlett always made things for me. Shes so good at it to. Making me dolls, clothes, and candy. We decided to stay the night there.
We completed our mission. We found enough food and meds to keep us going for a year. We would have to make trips to come get the rest of it though. Later that night, I was laying down in a room that had tons of ammunition and gun parts in it. Scarlett was at the work bench the next room over making something.
The next morning, I wake up with something beside me. It was a hand made bow with arrows. "She made me a bow? Awesome!" I say to myself. There was a not laying right next to it. "Hope you like your gift. I'm down by the river if you need me." The note read. "I should go thank her." I thought.
I walk out of the store and across the road, going down the trail to the river. I begin to hear voices as I got closer. I stay quiet. I crouch down and slowly make my way towards the river bank. I get to a little opening in the brush. I have a full view of the river bank. It kinda looked like a beach. I see five men with assault rifles. I then see they were all pointed at Scarlett.
Scarlett had a revolver pointed right back at them. I pull my bow off my back and stand up, still secluded by the brush. "Listen up Lucy!" Scarlett yells. "Red are fire, silver is regular, and green is poison! Make your choice!" She yelled. How did she know I was here? I was ghost quiet. It took me a few seconds to realize she was talking about the arrows.
The men were still trying to figure out what she was talking about. I pull out a red arrow from my quiver. I put the arrow in the knock and pull the string back. Scarlett taught me how to shoot when I was younger, so I knew what I was doing. I aim towards the man in the front. "I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna kill you." I say quietly. "Pow!" A man shoots at me. I look down at my stomach to see a nickel sized hole, gushing blood. I fall on my back and begin to scream.
"Lucy!" Scarlett screamed. A man comes behind the bushes and picks me up. They were reapers. "I'm sorry." He says. He brings me out of the brush and on the bank. He lays me down gently, next to Scarlett. "What the hell is your deal man?!? Don't tell me you've lost your nerve!" Another man said. He walks up to me and the man beside me.
"This is how it's done Madie." He said, lifting his foot. He stomps right on my wound. "AAAAHHH!!!" I scream in utter agony. "Danm it Paul! Look at what your doing! They've done nothing and were out here torturing a little girl!" The man named Madie shouted. "It's either them or us bud." The man said back.
Madie seemed to show remorse every time the other man stomped on me. I've never seen a reaper do that before. Finally, when the man gets done stomping me, he moves to Scarlett. Scarlett was already in tears. I've never seen her do that. The other man laughed and walked back over to his group and began whispering to them.
Madie got beside Scarlett and whispered in her ear. "How do I know I can trust you?" Scarlett whispered. "Because this is not what I want, to hurt little girl and... a beautiful woman." He said. Scarlett blushes. "I don't have a gun anymore. He took it." She said. "Actually, I have it. Here." He hands her revolver back. "Ok, on your mark." Scarlett said.
Scarlett helps me up. "Lucy, I know your hurt but you have to pull through. On three, we run. Ok?" She said. "Ok." I say with what breath I have left. "1" Get ready. "2" Don't stop for anything. "3!" Go! I begin sprinting as fast as I could while holding my stomach. I'm bleeding very badly and can't keep going.
I turn to see Scarlett and Madie, aiming there guns at the other men. "Pow!" "Pow!" "Pow!" Gunshots began to go off. My bows on my back along with my arrows, but I can't get it off. The other men began to drop. I go and hide in a near by bush until she killed them all. She and Madie dropped three before more and more came.
I slowly crawled over to another bush and covered myself in it. Men that were rushing in were stepping on me. I gave it my all not to scream. They didn't even notice me. The gunshots stopped. All the men were down on the beach. I slowly rose to see they have captured Scarlett, and killed Madie. I ran. I was a coward so I ran. I couldn't save her, I was too scared.
After that, I was broken. A broken soul.
