Margaret
Margaret had been so embarrassed by what she did that she almost didn't want to talk to Lance. She was still sick the next day, energy drained from the day before. Not only was she embarrassed about her running and throwing up right in front of Lance, but she was also embarrassed about the whole hair thing. If she had been in her right mind, she never would have done such a thing.
Lance didn't text her the next day. Or the next. She didn't hear from him at all over the weekend and she couldn't help but feel bad. Had she made a huge mistake? She certainly hoped not. He was the best friend she had ever had. She knew that was an outrageous thing to say, considering they had only known each other for a short amount of time, but it was true. She'd never really had friends before and it was weird to have someone to talk to. It was weird to have someone to share her secret with.
Margaret walked into class the following Monday, finally feeling a little better. Her throat was still sore most of the time, but she felt significantly better overall. When she looked to the back of the class, Lance was already in his seat. If it weren't for the fact that he couldn't hear her, she would have called out his name. She felt relieved to see him for some reason. She saw him all the time, but the past few days had been spent in anticipation. When she reached his desk, she tapped his notebook. Looking up, he smiled.
"Hey! You feeling better?" he signed, eyebrows creased in concern.
"Much better, thank you," she signed in reply, walking around to her own desk. When she sat down, she looked back at him. "I'm sorry about the other day," she said, a small blush creeping onto her face. "I didn't mean to..." she stopped, not knowing where she was going with what she was saying. Lance simply smiled, his look reassuring.
"Don't worry about it," he signed. "As long as you're okay." Something about what he said made her pulse sputter. Did he... care about her? This was unfamiliar territory.
