"Katie!" Mike screams from the pool. "Jake told me he's going to dump you!"

"I don't believe you!" I shout back. I mean why should I? Mike has been lying to me since the 6th grade, when he and I kind of had a thing. Then I went to Mexico for a week. When I got home, suddenly he and my (then) best friend were dating! I will never know what went on that week, but frankly, I'm not sure I want to. I would say they're still going strong, but that's not true. They're still going, just not strong.

"Don't listen to him. He's just jealous that your relationship is actually working out better then his. C'mon my car is this way." Emma says as she pulls me to the parking lot.

Jake and I have been together for 364 days. We're absolutely perfect for each other and everyone thinks so. Well, everyone except for Mike.

"Ugh!! I. hate. him!" I say for the millionth time as I reach into my pocket, pulling out my phone, quickly typing out a message, explaining the situation to Jake. I shove the phone back into my pocket, trying not to think too much about it.

"You ok?" Emma asks as I climb out of her lime green VW Bug.

Emma has been my best friend since the day we met on the Springview T-Ball team. I was in kindergarten, she was in first. Most people in our school think it's kind of strange that were such good friends, but that's just a down side of living in such a small town

"Yeah, thanks for the ride." I mumble, knowing I'll get grilled about it later.

**buzz**

I slide my vibrating phone out of my pocket as I shove open the heavy front door.

"I'm home!" I shout as I climb the stairs to my attic bedroom and collapse on top of the bed. As I read the message, my heart almost stops. I can't believe this is actually happening. I never thought this day would come. I type back a response, keeping in mind what I had talked to Taylor about earlier.

Just today at the pool, I had been talking to Taylor about how I wasn't sure if the relationship was going to work out. He and I had come to the conclusion that I should wait to see what happened.

Everyone wonders why I always confide in him. Even though he comes across as a player who doesn't actually care about anyone, he can actually be pretty nice. Besides, I know too much about Taylor for him to spill. In this town you also can't be too picky about who you talk to. You have the geeks, the populars' and the in-betweens, so basically if you have the attitude 'he's weird', 'she's ugly', 'they're stupid', you're going to end up befriending the creepy old math teacher.

**********

"Your late" Emma states.

"Sorry, my phone's dead"

"It's ok" Emma giggles. Her tone quickly switches from giggly to nervous in a matter of seconds. "Kate, I have to talk to you about something"

"What about? Omigosh! JAKE!" I scream as I run up to hug him. But for some reason, he just kind of stands there. As I begin to ask what's wrong, Emma yanks me away and drags me to her car. "I wonder why Jake is acting so strange..."

"Kate, that's what I need to talk to you about..."

*ONE YEAR LATER*

I wish I could say everything went different that day. That it never happened. That Springview high's best couple didn't break up one year ago today. Emma told me that everything happens for a reason. But all year, I've been wondering what that reason was. Why did we have to break up? What would my first year of high school been like without Jake? How different would my second year have been with him?

Jake first asked me out, on July 15, the summer before our first year of high school. He was my first real boyfriend, and we lasted 364 days before we broke up. Well, you can't exactly say we broke up, because it was never really official. All he did was change his status on his profile on LifeTyme. At the time, I didn't even have an account, so basically the entire town knew that we broke up, before I did.

"Katie! Wait up!" I turn around to see Taylor shutting his locker door, and running my way. "what class do you have now?"

"Spanish... how about you?"

"Same here, I heard Jakes in that class too"

That's just great. Just as I thought I was about to get over him, I got to spend every morning with him, for the next 184 days. Can't wait to see how this works out.
