Chapter Twenty-Two: Cloud of Dust....
Anton armed himself with his pistol and sword, danger was right outside his door; waiting for them to step out. Sandra could not help but peek outside their window to see four men of top of their horses, wearing black clothing and hats that was foreign to her. Danger was written all over their faces without even having them trying.
Sandra quickly stepped away from the window and moved to Emerald's side. "Who are they?" She asked to better understand the situation. Emerald shuddered in fear, not able to speak as she sobbed in mercy from the pain she has not yet been given. "Emerald, tell me!" Sandra did not mean to scream at the girl, she was frightened; not for herself, but for the man she love who was preparing himself for battle with the four men.
Anton showed no sign of fear as he prepared himself to face the four men who labeled themselves as Lady Killers.. the name may sound ridiculous, but the men was ruthless and showed no sign of mercy for others; including children. They worked for slave masters who had a huge problem with runaway workers, such as Emerald. The leader of the group came from North America as a military captain; bringing terror to the native tribes. Suddenly, after several crimes in his home country; he was kicked out and sent to the Southern islands where he was given a job of terrorizing and killing.
Emerald jumped from Sandra's sudden outburst, "T-they a-are g-going to k-kill me." She could hardly get her words out. Her heart was hammering inside her chest and at any given moment, it was going to burst out and land on the hardwood floor.
Anton suddenly stormed over and roughly grabbed Emerald by the arm, you can easily detect the anger in his eyes. The majority part of him knew this day would come, the day when he has to put his wife and himself life before anyone else. From the start he wanted to get rid of the girl, but he followed Sandra's good instincts.
"Anton, stop." said Sandra as he practically dragged Emerald towards the closed door.
A sharp whistle was heard from outside their home, and soon a western accent filled the thick air. "We know you are in there, we are trying to find a girl; do you know where she is. This girl goes by the name of pâle beauté"
Emerald looked up towards the man who had her life in his hands. "Please....please do not let them take me." She whimpered, which was no use. Then she turned to Sandra, with swelled eyes full of tears and pouty lips; she pleaded to the kind woman with her eyes.
"Anton-"
"No," his voice was stern and not easy to break. He was already opening the door and dragging the girl outside into the cold sunny day.
The four man stayed seated upon their horses as they watched Anton pull the poor girl out the house with Sandra grabbing on to her husband arm, trying to pull him back; but he just shrugged her off before dropping Emerald down on the dirt ground in front of their stallions feet.
"Anton," the western man greeted. "It's been a really long time since I have seen you, heard you was married." He immediately looked towards Sandra who took a step back behind Anton to shield herself from his icy stare. "A beauty, like Dorian said she would be."
Anton stood protectively in front of Sandra, to block her from the seven eyes staring at her. "Vex, how's the eye?"
The western man, Vex unconsciously ran his dirty fingers over the scar where his right eye use to be, he showed the battle wound with pride and to put fear into others. Vex was not offended by Anton's question, since he is no longer insecure by the defect. However, he was not pleased as sudden memories of Anton's uncle doing the damage to his former handsome face. "The ladies still love me. I should say I am pleased you corroborated quickly. You would guess how many times my men and I had to spill some blood to get to one whore."
