When a look of utter confusion crossed Tommy's face, I felt my heart sink down to my shoes. If the Greenie couldn't make heads or tails of the bloody code, then who could?
"That's all?" he asked, sounding disappointed, "Are you sure they're in the right order?"
The girl plucked the paper out of his hands and sighed. "The Maze has been repeating those words for months. We finally quit when it became clear. Each time, after the word PUSH, it goes a full week without showing any letter at all, and then it starts over again with FLOAT. So we figured that's the first word, and that's the order."
I glanced over at Tommy's disheartened face and said, "Cheerful, don't ya think?"
"Yeah," he groaned, "We need to get Minho down here- maybe he knows something we don't. If we just had more clues-" Suddenly, his face blanched, and he staggered back against the bookshelf, his breath coming in short bursts of ragged wind.
"Tommy? What's wrong with you?" A sudden bolt of fear went through me. Had he gotten hurt somehow in the Maze? "Your face just went as white as a ghost."
Thomas just shook his head, rubbing at his temples. "Oh, nothing. sorry," he said, "My eyes are hurting- I think I need some sleep."
Of course. I squeezed his shoulder. "Well, you spent all bloody night out in the Maze- go take a nap."
Tommy looked like he was going to say something, but he didn't. Instead, he turned and left for the Homestead.
