I looked at Cathryn hopefully, but her face was conflicted. Did she doubt herself or did she just not want to be with me? Before I could say anymore, her dad motioned for her to come.
"Sorry, Luke, I have to go now. But I really liked talking with you. Thanks." And without another word, she slipped through my fingers, and I let her go.

As I lay in bed that night, I couldn't help wondering what it was about Cathryn that made me feel so excited and scared. She was kind, understanding and smart, but she always held herself back. It was like she was inside a house, looking out at the world, but when someone looks in through the doorway, she'd close the door and hide. I hoped she could break out of that and open up to me, at least a little.
