I sat up on the couch catching my breath and adjusting my tank top hoping I hadn’t had an accidental wardrobe malfunction in my writhing on the couch. I stared at them wide eyed waiting for the silence to be broken. Blondie finally stepped forward smiling “Hey! We’re One Direction.” I watched as the other boys exchanged uncomfortable glances clearly indicating Blondie stole a line they were used to saying together. I couldn’t help but smirk as Jill went into a tizzy straightening up any pillows I had knocked out of place and profusely apologizing for my lack of manners or, as I like to call it, coordination. I stood up replacing my smirk with my cheesiest grin.
“Hi I’m Anna, I’ll be your personal entertainment for the morning. Coffee, Tea, booze? You name it I’ve got it,” I said in my best flight attendant voice. Jill shot me a glare and I stifled a laugh.
“Anna here is our intern and she has a lovely sense of humor as you can see,” I could almost hear her teeth grinding as she spat out the sentence, “She can get you anything you need.” I heard a snicker and felt more at ease. At least SOMEONE in the group had the same dirty mind that I did. Jill chose to ignore the snicker and continued with her spiel. “Make yourselves comfortable and really feel free to ask Anna for anything, she is here to serve.” She put an emphasis on ‘serve’ as if to remind me that I was working. Thanks mom. I nodded feeling my mouth start to go numb from smiling. I tuned Jill out for the rest of her scripted speech wondering if I would ever forget those words that were burned in my mind. “Welcome to On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” with those words she spun on her heel and exited the room. I waved to her as she walked out hoping that my creepy smile was fading, but at this point the feeling in my face was completely gone so who could really be sure? I glanced back over to the five pairs of eyes staring at me. Suddenly I felt weirdly like a piece of meat in the lions’ den.
I cleared my throat, “so yeah I’m Anna and it would literally be my pleasure to get you guys some coffee or tea or whatever you want to make your lives a little easier on this bright and shining morning,” my tone dripped with sarcasm and I hoped that they could take a joke.
“Absolutely no tea for me,” bad boy chimed in.
I nodded in acknowledgement, “alright point taken. What can I get for you?” I watched them rocking awkwardly on my heels before remembering my awful coordination and standing still. I pulled my trusty notepad out of my pocket and jotted down their coffee orders. Man they drink some girly drinks. “Okay I’ll get right on that.”
Puppy dog took a step forward, “Do you want some help?” I looked up surprised from my notepad; that was a first. Normally the guests just nodded and sat down on the couch to be distracted by the xbox and flat screen mounted to the wall.
“Oh you don’t have to do that. You should enjoy your free time,” I appreciated the offer but what in the world would I talk to a boy band member about? I hadn’t even had the chance to google stalk them yet. I turned and headed out the room quickly pulling up google and typing in ‘One Direction’ in the search bar. As the blue loading bar was inching towards the end I heard a creak. I glanced around to see that puppy dog had indeed followed me out of the waiting room.
“I know you said that I didn’t have to, but waiting rooms get a little cramped, especially when Harry and Louis start wrestling, and I would just rather get some air if you wouldn’t mind the company?”
Well that literally had to be the cutest self invite I’ve ever received. Who could deny Mr. Puppy Dog eyes after that? So I nodded, and mustered, “Sure you’re more than welcome. It will be kind of a boring trip but who am I to turn down a walking buddy?” Yes in case you didn’t realize, I am the queen of cool.
“Five coffees probably aren’t the easiest to carry anyhow so I’ll just be a pair of extra hands.”
“Well be careful, wouldn’t want you to ruin the money makers,” I wiggled my fingers in his direction. He gave me a confused glance and I realized just how little I knew about this band. I took a short pause composing myself internally before asking, “You don’t play the guitar do you…?”
