My feet ached and I was overjoyed when I spotted the rows of houses just waiting for me to take shelter in. Just the thought of a warm and cozy bed made me pick up my pace until I was jogging but it also set off alarms in my head.
I jogged up the steps to a light blue house and pounded on the door. I listened for the shuffle of feet or hungry growls but I heard nothing. Waiting another few moments in silence I wrapped my hand around the doorknob and twisted it pushing the door open, thankfully it was unlocked. I hadn't slept in three full days and the exhaustion was killing me.
I wrapped my hand around the handle of my knife as I closed the front door. I gripped my knife in my right hand as I cautiously scoped out the house prepared for anything. I checked every room in the house making sure nothing was going to pop out and try to bite me and once I was satisfied that the house was empty I let out a huge breath I hadn't realized I was holding. It was like a hundred pounds had lifted from my shoulders and I could finally breath.
I dropped my bag onto the floor in the living room next to the couch which I pushed against the front door and headed for the kitchen. There were a few broken plates and bowls on the floor but nothing that really worried me. I opened the cupboards and grabbed every can I could. Three cans of beans, canned fruit, can soup, a jar of peanut butter and some boxes of cereal was all I managed to find. I found some water bottles in the fridge and grabbed those as well.
Dumping everything onto the couch I grabbed my knife and cut open a can of pears in which I devoured in seconds since I hadn't eaten in two days. I had run out of food and that's why I left the safety of a previous house to look for more. I drank the juice and threw the can across the room satisfied with the small serving. I packed everything away in my bag so I was prepared if I had to suddenly leave.
I decided to check the upstairs rooms just to make sure everything was secure before I went to sleep. I didn't bother taking my bag with me as I grabbed my knife and trudged up the stairs. I slowly swung open the first door to my right and peered inside. The rotting smell made me shut the door immediately as I started to cough. A dog. A dog was laying on the shower floor motionless.
I took a few deep breaths before moving on to the next room where I found the master bedroom. I eyed the handgun laying on the bedside table and walked over to it picking it up. I wasn't a big fan of guns but in this world you needed them or you would die. I had a bow and arrows at one point but I had to leave it behind when a warehouse I was raiding was overrun. I checked the clip and it was fully loaded so I shoved it into the waistband of my blue jeans. Finding nothing else of use I exited the room and shut the door behind me. The next room was a young boys room which I ignored but the last room caught my eye.
It was a teenage girls room who was probably around my age and I admired her sense of style. I grabbed a clean pair of black skinny jeans and slipped them on after removing my dirt and blood covered blue ones. I tossed my old ones to the side of the room and grabbed a tight, long sleeved black shirt, removed my dirty green one and slipped on the new one. I got a clean pair of socks and picked up the tight leather jacket that was laying on the bed and pulled it on hugging myself and smiling from the warmth the jacket provided.
I examined myself in the full body mirror that hung on the wall and was satisfied with my look. I slipped on my plain black shoes that I had before and went back downstairs.
Once I got downstairs I collapsed on the couch and my eyelids immediately grew heavy as I began to dose off into a deep slumber. But sleep would have to wait a little while longer since voices were approaching the house. I stood on the couch and looked out of the peephole in the door. A man with a scruffy beard and a boy maybe a year older than me with a weird cowboy type hat.
