The sound of car doors slamming made me jump up in surprise from my deep slumber. Instinctively I grabbed my knife that was strapped to my thigh and took a moment to realize I wasn't in any danger. My door opened next to me and Carl peered in at me.

"Come on." He grunted and moved so I could slide out of the car. I winced at the bright sun and blinked until my eyes adjusted to the harsh light. Once I could see again I observed my surroundings and temporary home.

The tall fence with barb wire on top looked secure but wobbled a little as walkers pushed each other onto the fence. I looked at the field and saw the graves first. There were two pens in the middle of the yard, one with a beautiful horse and one had pigs in it.

I followed Rick and Carl up the gravel path and through another fence into the main yard. People were gathered around sitting, eating, talking and staring at me. I held my head high and kept my gaze in front of me. If they want to stare then I'll give them something to stare at. I wouldn't be staying long anyway so might as well make an impression.

We entered the prison and Rick stopped walking while Carl went off to do his own thing.

"Let's get you settled in, sound good?" Rick turned his head to look back at me and I just nodded letting him lead the way. We walked into a cell block and up the stairs to the higher cells. Rick walked to the farthest one on the right and pulled the sheet back waiting for me to go in first. I walked in and looked at the dull cell sighing heavily.

"Carl and I are downstairs, second cell, if you need anything." I nodded at Rick and set my bag down on the floor next to the bed. "Come on, I want you to meet the council."

I lifted my head with curiosity. "Council?"

"Yeah. A couple of the most trusted people here," Rick led me out of the cell and out of the cell block. "I use to be the leader. There wasn't as many of us then but we lost people taking over this place. I-, something happened and I couldn't be the leader anymore." I couldn't see Ricks face since I was behind him but I knew he had lost someone close to him and he was put in a bad place.

"I'm sorry." Is all I said. I didn't know what to say. Rick grunted in response and led me down a long hallway until we finally stopped and walked into a room with people circled around a table.

"Rick," a man with long white hair and a long beard said once we walked in. He was on crutches which had me curious and I glanced down to see half of his leg missing. I kept my head down listening to Rick talk to everyone about the run before introducing me.

"This," I felt a hand on my shoulder and I chose that moment to look up, "is Lightning. We found her in one of the houses while we were out."

"Lightning?" A familiar deep voice said barely above a whisper but I heard him. I turned my head to the left but only saw Ricks side so I took a step forward and felt my lip quiver as my eyes stung with tears.

"Uncle Daryl!" I took three long strides before jumping into my uncle arms.

"I can't believe you're alive." He breathed into my hair.

"Of course I am. You can't get rid of me that easy." I pulled away from him and smirked. "Besides, I learned my survival skills from the best." My uncles deep chuckle was like music to my ears. I tore my gaze away from him and looked at everyone's shocked faces around the table.
