I was helping Rick out in the garden while Carl was still asleep. Rick said he had been up all night reading comics so he let him sleep in. I couldn't sleep again last night so I was up early anyway.
I wiped the sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand and tried to ignore the heat from the sun. I had already tossed my leather jacket to the side of the garden but I was still extremely warm.
"Almost done." Rick sighed as he threw some leaves that were no good into buckets for the pigs. He filled up two buckets in which we carried to the pig pen and dumped the mix of leaves, worms, dirt and a few rotten vegetables into the bins for them to devour.
"Finished," Rick wiped the sweat from his forehead with his gloves and leaned against the pig pen. "Finally. I'm gonna go shower." I picked up my jacket but didn't hold onto it for long because the team assigned to keep the walkers from tipping the fence started to yell at us.
The fence was going to fall. I dropped my jacket and ran to the entrance of the yard. I pulled the gate over and let Rick run in first and I hadn't even noticed my uncle but he whizzed passed me right behind Rick. They opened the gate to the path between the two fences and I followed after closing the gate to the field. I pulled my knife out and started killing the walkers that stacked against the fence but there was always another to replace the previous one. Everyone was stabbing but it was no use.
"It's no use!" I yelled at them above the loud growls of the hungry predators. "There's to many!"
"What do we do?" One of the woman asked.
"I know what to do." I glanced at everyone before running to the gate and pulling it open but locking it behind me so the others couldn't follow me. By the time Rick got the key out and got the door open I'd be long gone. I ignored everyone's shouts asking me what the hell I was doing or telling me to stop and open the gate but instead I just pulled the rope to open the huge, red metal doors and I ran out.
I pushed a walker away from me and ran behind the large mass of walkers. I took out my knife and placed it on the palm of my hand creating a deep cut that quickly had blood pouring out. I already had some of the walkers attention but it was enough.
"HEY! OVER-," I pushed a walker that got to close. "OVER HERE! COME AND GET ME BITCHES!" I screamed at the top of my lunges. I fired my gun off once into the sky and that got a lot of attention. "Shit." I muttered to myself. I had about two dozen - if not, more - walkers stumbling towards me.
I glanced at the others to see Rick finally unlock the gate and push it open. I turned my back and ran before any of them decided to be dumbasses and come out to get me. I stabbed a few walkers that got in my way or got to close and just continued to run up the road. I glanced back every now and than to make sure the walkers were still following me but every time they got further and further away.
I had been running for a while and I was starting to get tired. Walkers don't get tired and that was a problem. I glanced behind me as I slowed to a walk. They were still pretty far behind but not as far as before. I spotted a car up ahead and ran for the open trunk. I hopped in and was thankful it wasn't to small so that I had lots of wiggle room. I tried to shut the trunk but cursed when it wouldn't close but it was also sort of a good thing. I'd rather not die because I tried to be a hero and then got trapped in the trunk of a car. I ripped a piece off my shirt and used it to tie the trunk closed and then I waited.
