He punched her, kicked her and then punched her again.
"Stupid motherfucker! Nobody screws me over!" He screamed in her face.
"I-I-I'm sor-sorry," she cried. I watched helplessly from the top of the stairs with Adam and Thunder. He finally stalked off muttering horrible insults towards my mother and slammed the front door. The three of us didn't hesitate to run down the stairs and to our mother who had a busted lip and a black eye was forming already.
"Mommy, are you okay?" My five year-old self asked innocently as tears ran down my face.
"Mommy is fine, honey. Adam, take your sisters upstairs and play a game or something." Adam nodded and grabbed mine and Thunders hand dragging us upstairs.
My eyes opened slowly and I stared into the darkness as the memory played on the stone wall. My mom had tried so hard to be strong for us and I admired her for that. She wasn't the best mom ever but she did the best she could. Dad was abusive when he was drinking. He was always drunk, everyday, for eight years. It started when Adam was born and ended when I was almost seven. He finally smartened up after he hit Thunder once.
I sighed needing to use the bathroom so I got out of bed and walked out of my cell. It was still dark out and everyone was still asleep so I tried to stay as silent as possible. I made it to the bathrooms without waking anyone and did my business. I passed two or three people on the way back in which I just smiled awkwardly at them.
I made it back to the cell block and got a glass of water sitting on the table. I ran a hand through my hair and took a deep breath.
"Can't sleep?" A soft whisper said behind me and I jumped tipping over my cup, water spilling onto the table. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." Carl chuckled a little and I glared at him. I got some paper towel and wiped up the spilt water before pouring myself another glass.
"It's fine." I sighed really not in the mood to argue with him.
"Wanna go outside with me?" Carl's question caught me off guard and I stared at him for a moment. "Sure," I replied finally. "I just have to get my shoes."
I padded up to my cell and slipped on my boots before tip-toeing back down. Carl was next to the exit waiting patiently and we walked out together in silence.
"Once you get past the moaning it's actually pretty nice out here." I muttered more to myself than Carl but he answered anyway.
"Yeah but, the walkers are becoming a problem. The fence is going to give eventually." Carl sighed and I twirled my knife around in my hand.
"You going on the run tomorrow?" I asked stabbing the ground.
"Yup." Carl stared up at the sky in which I followed his gaze. I laid back on the ground and positioned myself so I was comfortable, Carl did the same. "I love the stars." He said.
"Me too." I smiled a little. We stayed there for who knows how long, staring at the sky, listening to the moans of the walkers. It was only until the sky started to turn a pinky-orange that I realized we must've been out here a while.
"Come on. Let's head back inside before someone wakes up and notices we're gone. Don't need everyone running around the prison like their asses are on fire." I scoffed and stood up wiping off my jeans. I offered Carl a hand in which he accepted and I pulled him to his feet.
