It all started when we were due to finish Highschool and head off to college. There was the fear that we would all be split up as a result. However something amazing and unbelievable happened and our adventures together wouldn't end, instead, it would only be the beginning of everything. The beginning of danger, excitement, and discovery.
The beginning
Time was flying by so much it seemed like only yesterday the five of us had started year 11, but now here we were laid and sat out on the school field reminiscing about how we had first met on that nervous first day in September, four years ago now and how much fun we had during those years.
Now, we could all end up at different schools. Sophie, Liam, Peter, and I would be attending a school for children with magic powers now that we were all reaching the required age to attend; sixteen, and even though we planned on attending the same one, the chances of that weren't very high. We could all get accepted at different ones. It all depended on our grades and our initial exams that they all had that tested us on our use of our powers and our basic knowledge of hero facts. Anyway, while the four of us would be at a hero school, Sam would be attending a regular college or sixth form.
"I can't believe that this may be the last weeks we spend altogether," Sophie said as she sat up, her blonde hair falling out of her ponytail.
"I can't believe it either," I said. "You better not get in any more fights Sam," I added turning to face one of my other friends.
"I can't promise that. What if someone winds me up?" He asked me, as his green eyes fell onto me.
Sam was a natural troublemaker. I don't think he always went looking for trouble but it always sort of found him. What I do know though was he was always getting into trouble for being in fights. Don't get me wrong he was a great person. Despite his bad temper, he was friendly, fun-loving, and a good friend to have. It was just best if you didn't get on his bad side.
"Walk away," I suggested, shrugging my shoulders.
"That can be easier said than it is done," he replied.
Sophie untied her hair and redid it when the faint sound of the school bell rang signaling it was the end of the Lunch break. It was finally the last period of the day. We all stood up and made our way back inside the building.
"Right, I'll see you all later," Peter said once we reached the science corridor. He then walked towards Sophie, pulled her close to him, and planted a kiss on her lips. They were dating you see.
"See ya mate," Liam said back when the two stopped kissing.
Liam was Sophie's identical twin brother but they couldn't be more different personality-wise. Whereas Sophie was extremely sporty, Liam wasn't really into sports and was more of the geeky type. Even though they had different personalities they, of course, shared similar features. His hair was as blond as his sisters and they both had blue eyes. However, Liam had very faint hints of grey shades within them.
We all said bye and went off to our separate classes.
"Let's sit at the back," I suggested to Liam, who happened to be in the same class as me.
"Alright," he agreed, and then we made our way back there.
Once everyone was seated the teacher began to introduce the lesson.
An hour later when the lesson was over, Liam asked me something, while I was putting my pencil case away into my bag. "Would you like to go with me to the cinema tomorrow night?"
"As friends or on a date?" I asked him because he had asked me out before.
He had such a huge crush on me, everyone could see it. But I didn't feel about him that way. Well, I don't think I did. Don't get me wrong I loved him too but we had been best friends for so long, I didn't want that friendship to be broken if we ever had a fallout. Besides, he was my best friend Liam, and the thought of us being more felt strange in my mind.
"On a date, maybe," he answered, looking down to the floor and then back up at me.
"I have already told you, I don't want to date because it might ruin our friendship. I love you too much to lose you, and besides, you know I don't feel that way," I told him.
"Well, it was worth a try. I love you too much to not be with you. I'm not going to give up on us being together," he said.
"I know," I sighed. Then I told him, "Let's go," as I stood up out of my seat and started walking out of the classroom. Liam followed me.
We found the others walking out of their classrooms. Once they saw us waiting for them they walked over to us and we left school together.
"Do you know, we still don't have a very good CD player for our birthday party and it's only a few days away?" Sophie asked her brother as we left the school gates.
They were close to reaching sixteen now and already they had their powers but mine hadn't even manifested yet and I was already sixteen. I prayed that they would come before finishing Highschool or I would have to wait a whole other year to attend a hero school.
"One of my friends has a very good one. His aunt bought it for him for Christmas. I'll ask him if you can borrow it," Peter replied.
"Thanks, Peter. Let me know if he says yes please," Sophie said.
"I will," he agreed and held out his hand to her. She took it and we all carried on walking
When I had departed from my friends and got home I went straight into the living room and turned on the TV.
"Would ya like a cuppa, love?" I heard my mum's voice call from the kitchen. I didn't expect her to be back so early.
"Yes, please. A coffee," I replied.
A few minutes later she returned with two mugs and handed me one before sitting down next to me.
"Thanks," I said.
"No problem."
"Mum, what if my powers never come?" I asked her. It was something I worried a lot about. If I never got my powers, I would never be able to attend a hero school, preferably St. Mary's, and I would let down my inter-family.
"They'll come, just wait. You've only just turned sixteen," she replied.
"But Liam and Sophie already have theirs and they're not even sixteen yet," I pointed out.
"Sometimes they come early, sometimes a little late, but I wouldn't worry, " she told me.
I sighed and then took a sip of the coffee. It was still very hot so I blew it to try and cool it down and then took another drink. Coffee was just what I needed after that long day at school. I only had a few hours to relax before it was time to go to bed, ready for another stressful full day at school revising for exams and worrying about my none existent powers.
