"The most fucked up joke life will play on you is meeting the right person at the wrong time."
◆ ◆ ◆
"Ok so, he'll be here any minute so I need you to go get the keys...." My mom is rushing around the house trying to get ready for her date. I find it funny because I rarely see her this stressed out.
"Which are?"
"Which are on my dresser, but only take the car key so that I can get back in the house. We don't wanna have a repeat of that time you..."
"It was an accident mom! Are you gonna hold that over me forever?" I say laughig.
"If I have to, yes." She hops to her room with one heel on and checks herself in the mirror. "How do I look?" She asks.
"You look perfect." I say sincerely while grabbing the car key off her dresser. Just then the doorbell rings and she runs, as much as she can in her shoes, to the door.
"Can I meet him?" I ask.
"No. Not yet at least." She says, grabs her purse and slides out the door before I get a chance to see her date. I huff and grab a few more things then head over to Mr. Ricci's house to get the files. I decided not to wait too long to go because I knew if I did I might not have ever left.
When I get there it doesn't look like anyone is home but I just assume that he sent all his workers home. I walk up to the door and knock three times but when Jacob opens it instead of Mr. Ricci I'm surprised.
"Where's your dad?" I ask and walk in. Since we never really got off on the right foot I don't feel compelled to be nice to him. Or at least that's what I say so I don't feel bad, it's not in me to be naturally nonchalant and rude.
"Well hello to you too." He says sarcastically and closes the door.
"Hi. So, where's your dad?" I ask trying to get out of here as soon as possible. I hated awkward situations and this was bound to be one if I didn't get in and get out.
"He left before you got here. He didn't tell me where he went but he told me to expect you so come on." Jacob starts towards his dad's office and I follow him. He opens up a drawer and hands me the files.
"Thank you. I'll be on my way out." I wave good bye then awkwardly walk towards the door and go to my car.
Since I'm going to have the house to myself I'm excited to do whatever I want. Which really isn't much but I like the idea of being alone. When I try to start the car something weird keeps happening. It won't start.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck." I groan and hit the steering wheel in frustration. After sitting in the car for more than 10 minutes I decide to go back and knock on the door. Jacob opens the door looking uninterested and slightly confused.
"Um, my car won't start." I say awkwardly and Jacob just stares at me. He nods his head and continues looking at me like he doesn't understand what I want.
"Can you please help me." He smiles looking more amused at this by the minute.
"You want me to help you?" He asks and I nod. "You don't even like me and you expect me to help you?"
"I never said I didn't like you!" I say defensively even though he's not wrong.
"Look could you please just help me?" I basically beg. He looks at me for a while, like he's weighing his options.
"Fine, I guess." He says in an irritated tone but steps out the house anyways. "So what seems to be the problem?"
"I don't know, it just won't start."
"How did it drive on the way here?" He asks and does a quick scan of the car, looking at every part of it.
"Well the cars been having some problems but I thought it could at least get me here and get me back."
"It looks like it could be something with the muffler. We might have to call a tow truck, they can take you back home too." He says and starts walking inside.
"Why can't you drive me back?" I ask.
"My dad hid my keys again." He says nonchalantly.
"Why?"
"You ask way too many questions." He says making me huff in agrivation and picks up his phone to call a tow truck. He walks into another room while I do nothing but sit and wait. I look at my phone and see that it's only on 10%. Fucking great.
"So bad news apparently they're busy tonight and probably won't be able to get here until around 10." He says sounding as annoyed as me.
I sigh, it's only almost 7pm now. "So what are we gonna do?"
"Well I'm gonna order food, as for you, call a cab maybe?" He walked off and left me sitting in the kitchen, I rolled my eyes.
"I don't have cab money!" I shout as he walks into another part of the house, I still haven't moved from my spot in front of the main door.
"Not my problem." He shrugs walking past me.
"You don't have another car? Why's your dad still taking your keys anyways, you're like 21?" I ask following him into the living room.
"Almost 21."
"Same difference. Now that I think about it, why do you even still live with your dad? Aren't you rich enough to buy your own house?"
"Ok 1, if you're going to follow me the least you could do is shut up. And 2, I do have my own apartment but its under uh construction." He sits down on the couch. He nodded after saying that like he was content with the lie he thought up.
"Stay at a friend's house." I suggest.
"Why don't you call a friend to come pick you up."
"I don't have any."
"Why am I not surprised."
"You are the worst host ever. Plus I just moved here, was I supposed to find one in between helping my mom here? " I say folding my arms like a child.
"Look, Dandelion-"
"Daisy." I scoff, I don't think anyone has ever treated me so rudely. How could someone so cold and ugly on the inside. Maybe I just don't know him enough.
"I don't wanna be stuck with you as much as you don't wanna be stuck with me so lets make the best out of it." He sighs ignoring my interruption.
"Lets play a game." I suggest.
"No."
"You're impossible."
"Im not here to entertain you." He says walking away from to get his charger. I look at my phone, dead.
"What were you doing outside that restaurant?" I ask when he sits back down.
"Getting something to eat." He says with an amused look on his face, he knows how much I want the answer.
"Somehow I don't think that's true." I say pushing the subject, I know I shouldn't but he gets under my skin so I won't.
"Listen sweetheart, you can let all those conspiracies you have about me run rampant in your head all you want but I'm not telling you a damn thing." He says facing me, it almost feels as if he's trying to intimidate me. "Maybe someone would put up with your shit if you shut your damn mouth every once in a while." He says which irritates me to my core.
"That's it, I'm leaving." I say and get up in a fit of rage.
"And going where? You gonna walk home?" I hesitantly sit back down. He laughs while looking through his phone as I come back.
"What." I snap.
"You're something alright." He says laughing.
