The light from the lamp next to your mother's bed flickered, then went out all together. She put her book down on the bedside table, and tried to turn the knob on the lamp, to no avail.

There was a sudden cry from the room across the hall: her baby, you.

She turned to your father, knowing that it was his turn to go check on you. He laid on his side of the bed, mouth hanging open, snoring lightly.

With a roll of her eyes, your mother climbed out of the bed, crossed the room, and opened the door.

The first thing she noticed was that the door to your nursery was closed. She always left it open, as your family couldn't really afford to spend what little money they had left after buying all of the necessary baby supplies on a baby monitor.

She opened the door, seeing a black silhouette next to your crib. She gasped in surprise, causing the figure to turn around.

"Hello, sweetheart," the all-too-familiar man said, yellow eyes glinting in the darkness. Blood dripped slowly from his arm into your crib, each drop making a soft thud as it hit the soft white sheets.

"No, no, get out of here," your mother pleaded. "Stay away from my baby. Get out, now."

The man grinned, taking a step away from the crib.

"You remember our deal, don't you?"

The grownups didn't know that you could hear them, or else they just didn't care. You heard every murmur, every whisper about you.

"-terrible house fire."

"-no idea how she survived."

"-always been a strange child. Never talks to anyone. Reads too much."

"It's been seven years. Not a single family's even considered her. Not that I blame them. There have been some pretty suspicious things happening since she got here."

You never let them see you cry. Even as a child, you knew that it made you look weak. Crying made you easy prey. You never let the words get to you, and if you did, you sure as hell didn't show it.

But one family, one family wanted you. You were the first kid they met when they showed up, as you had snuck outside to play in the tall oak tree that stood in the front yard of the Nevada State Orphanage.

You played with the family's daughter, Jessica, while the grownups talked about the official stuff. She was a little older than you, but she seemed to enjoy playing with you anyway. She even let you win tag a few times, just to be nice. No one had ever done that for you before, but you didn't tell her that.

Your new family was a dream come true, and over time, you almost forgot those first miserable seven years.

-----------------------------------

Jessica got accepted into Stanford University, and it was only a four-and-a-half hour drive from your house in Carson City, Nevada. You visited her every weekend you could, and she invited you to a Halloween party with some of her friends and her boyfriend. She'd even gotten you a fake ID.

You called her several times on the way to the apartment she shared with her boyfriend, Sam Winchester. He was a good friend of yours, and you thought that him and Jess made a great couple.
