Tess’s POV:

After a moment, he pulled back an inch or two. My breath came out shaky. Stephen had just kissed me! My heart pounded roughly in my chest and I struggled to clear my head. Before I could comprehend what I was doing, I leaned forward and put my lips back to his.

He reacted immediately, kissing me back and tightening his hand on the back of my neck. His other arm came off my shoulders and snaked around my waist. I stiffly moved my hands up to his face as I kissed him with an enthusiasm I never knew I had. So this was what kissing felt like. Sober kissing, anyway. It was weird and fun.

I gasped slightly as his tongue slid across my bottom lip. That was what cleared my head enough to pull back. We were both a little breathless.

“I—uh…” I whispered, desperate to fill the silence.

“Yeah,” he agreed.

I started giggling. Did that just happen? Wow. I couldn’t even form a coherent thought in my head.

“You’re so cute and innocent,” he chuckled, playing with a strand of my hair.

I shook my head, smiling. He leaned his forehead against mine. I couldn’t help it—I kissed him again.

“You know,” he whispered between kisses. “My mom…”

“Shhh,” I murmured.

He laughed, smiling against my lips. “My mom couldn’t stop asking if we were together tonight.”

I pulled back a little. “Really?”

“She even lectured me about not hurting you and stuff.” He gently kissed me again.

“Everyone keeps asking if we’re dating yet,” I murmured into his mouth.

“Mmm,” he replied, pulling me up against him. “We should be.”

!!!!! “Hm?”

“We should be together,” he repeated, kissing me as deeply as he could without using his tongue.

I didn’t reply. The butterflies in my stomach were moshing again as he slowly pulled back. My pace quickened and I glanced up at him. Stephen’s face was carefully blank, with just a slight hope in his eyes.

“Please,” he whispered, putting his forehead to mine. “Be my girlfriend.”

I bit my lip to avoid a dorky grin. And then I nodded.

An adorable smile spread over his face. “Really?”

“Really,” I laughed.

Stephen closed the distance between our mouths with eagerness. I kissed back happily. After a moment, he pulled back.

“Come on, it’s late. You should go to sleep.”

“No, thanks.”

He laughed. “Come on.” He pulled me up to a standing position. “It’s after 2:30.”

“Really?” Kissing passed a lot of time.

He led me over to my bunk and pulled back the blankets for me as I kicked off my shoes and shrugged out of my hoodie. With a sigh, I grudgingly climbed in and snuggled down into the bed. Stephen leaned down with a smile.

“Goodnight,” he whispered, quieter than before because we were closer to everyone else. He leaned down and kissed me softly. “Girlfriend,” he added.
