Stephen's POV
"Okay guys, come here," Brian called from his laptop. "They sent us an audition video from the Junior Roadie program applications."
"Why would they send one to us?" Jess called from the bathroom.
"This girl did a mash up of some of our songs," Brian answered. "They were so impressed, they want us to see it."
I got up from my bed and joined everyone else in crowding around Brian's computer as he opened the video link from the email.
A young girl appeared on the screen, with a guitar.
"Dude, she's hot," John said, leaning forward to look closer. She was really pretty.
"Her name is Tessa Hampton," Brian told us, reading the email. "She's eighteen."
"Press play," Josh urged.
Brian full-screened the video and played it. The young girl, Tessa, smiled at the camera and said,"So this is my acoustic mashup of 'Passenger Seat' and 'Papercut,' both by The Summer Set. She smiled again, then began to strum on her guitar I immediately recognized the chords as the beginning of "Papercut." Then she began to sing, and my jaw dropped at the sound of her voice.
"How can you tell me that your mind's made up, when I see you throwing pennies in a well for luck. And for what? We're not stuck here. Just keep messing around and get in trouble like we used to,"
Then she faded into the pre-hook of "Passenger Seat."
"So roll down the windows, never get caught, baby no one will know."
Then back into the second verse of Papercut.
"How can you tell me that your mind's made up when we're just eighteen. We're much too young to make decisions 'bout the future, where we want to be now, nothing's changing,"
Then she sang the chorus of Passenger Seat. "Just sweep me off my feet again, my new addiction. I'll be waiting, I've been addicted to this...Papercut doesn't hurt that much. You sneak under my skin like the first time we touched. Ohhh...why do you think you're such a mess?"
I was both surprised and impressed by Tessa's ability to flow together these two songs. Even though they were both acoustics, "Papercut" was rougher and more intense, while "Passenger Seat" was a gentle lullaby-like song. But this girl had the voice of an angel. Every time she looked up at the camera, her big blue eyes sparkled with emotion, and she smiled. She was utterly mesmerizing.
She continued the song flow and then the camera faded into the next scene.
"I hope you enjoyed my acoustic mashup," Tessa smiled shyly. "My next song is also a mashup of Summer Set songs, but this one is a little more upbeat." she smiled again as she began to play her guitar.
This mashup was a split-screen video. The screen was divided up into blocks. One block showed a level view of a keyboard, Tessa's delicate hands resting on the keys gently. Another showed a view of the guitar head, with her playing. Another was a large mic that Tessa was singing into. The fourth was drum pad. A few others that disappeared and reappeared were shots of Tessa singing different parts of each song. The mashup consisted of "Chelsea", "When We Were Young", "Young", and "Someone Like You."
When the music video came to an end, Brian pressed the pause button. We were all silent. John looked at Josh with a thoughtful look on his face. Jess was excited as she met my eyes. Josh looked as if someone had just spoken Japanese to him. Brian ran his hands through his hair as he turned to face the rest of us.
