Chapter One

“Yes dad. Yes. Yes. Okay! Dad – I promise.” I rolled my eyes at my mother, who was standing in the doorway with a knowing look on her face. She grinned and came to sit on my bed.

“I-Dad! I’m going to be late! You too. I will. Bye.” Hanging up the call, I turned to my mom.

“He is literally the most overprotective person in the entire universe!”

She just laughed. “It comes with the job, plus he almost lost you so-“

“He wants to take care of his baby. Yeah yeah, I’ve only heard it a hundred times. So much for being a big manly alpha.” I snorted. I may joke about it and get incredibly frustrated, but I guess I did appreciate my dad being overprotective. At least he cared, unlike mum’s parents. They haven’t spoken to her since before I was born... I can’t imagine what that would be like.

“So you all ready?”

I nodded and grinned.

“Nervous?”

“Yes! But I think Jay is picking me up, so least I’ll have him!”

Jay, otherwise known as Jayden, and his family moved to our pack when I was about 5. They had some issues with another family, and thought it would be best to move. Mom and Dad had welcomed them into our pack, and since then we have been inseparable, despite the fact that he’s a year older than me.

“Do you need a hand with your bag?”

I glanced at the monster of a bag standing by my closet. “It’s alright thanks, Jay can do it. Why else would I have a best friend that’s a guy?”

Mom shook her head and clucked her tongue, then pulled me into a bone crushing hug. For a human, she was unbelievably strong.

“I’m going to miss you Ella.”

“I’ll miss you too, mom.” I said, my voice slightly muffled in her shoulder.

“Promise you’ll call me if it happens?”

I sighed and nodded. “If, being the operative word.”

Mum pulled back and held me at arm’s length, her eyes staring right into mine. “Honey, it’s okay, you know. Whatever happens doesn’t change who you are.”

I bit my lip, not wanting to have this conversation right before leaving. “I know.”

Saved by a knock on my door, I gently untangled myself from my mother and pulled open my bedroom door.

“Chocolate or caramel?” Was the greeting I got from Jay, silvery-blue eyes glistening at me.

“Hi to you too, loser. Um chocolate.” He rolled his eyes and handed me a paper bag. I peeked inside and grinned at the donut. “Thank you!”

“The things I do for you! Hey, Charlotte!” Unlike the majority of people in our pack, Jay had no problem calling my parents by their names, much to their content. I don’t know about dad, but mum – who spent about 17 years not even knowing wolves existed – still felt awkward about being called Luna.

“Hi Jay. You’ll look after my girl wont you?” Mom said, shuffling morosely.

“Of course, she’ll be absolutely fine. I’ve been to this camp since I was 12.” Mom nodded and sighed.
