Chapter 10

I gaped at Jay blankly for a solid minute. He’d said it through the mindlink? You couldn’t hear the mindlink until you changed, and I was certain I hadn’t changed. So how was that even possible?! Then it dawned on me. I threw a playful glare at Jay.

“You shouldn’t make jokes about things like that. It’s a touchy subject.” I twirled a tone of light humour into my voice, as I wasn’t really that bothered by the joke. I mean, it did annoy me a little, but nothing to get all flustered over.

Jay’s face was still confused. Huh, he must have been practising his acting. Usually by now he would have smirked at me or something.

“No, Ella, I’m serious. How did you... You’re not meant to be able to...”

I narrowed my eyebrows at Jay. “Okay, seriously. Enough.” I turned back to face Maria again, but Jay grabbed my arm to stop me.

“Ella, I know I usually tease you, but I swear on my mother’s life I’m telling the truth here.”

My stomach flipped, and a nervous sweat prickled across the back of my neck. “Jay...”

He gripped my shoulder and stared me straight in the eye. “Ella have you shifted?”

I shook my head slowly. “Please tell me that what just happened is possible.”

He furrowed his eyebrows, still staring at me. Oh my god, there was probably something wrong with me. Maybe I was sick. I’m sure there was some kind of disease that makes its victims tune into weird frequencies! Right. That was it. I’m doomed.

“I’ve...I’ve never heard of it before. Is this the first time it’s happened? What else did you hear?” His voice became focused, and Jay turned into an all-business guy.

“No, never before. Nothing... Only your voice! It was as if you were speaking straight to me!” I could feel myself betting flustered, my voice going slightly high pitch and a restless feeling taking over my body.

“El, calm down! I’m sure it’s not a bad thing! Do you want me to ask your dad? I’m sure he’d know.”

I shook my head rapidly. “No no no, no way. No one’s asking my dad!” Talking about this with dad would be like having the sex talk with him. Let’s just say that didn’t go well. “Jay what’s wrong with me?”

Jay’s eyes softened and he brushed my hair behind my ear. “Hey, don’t cry. You’re perfect, I promise there’s nothing wrong with you. I’ll figure it out, ‘kay?” I sniffed and rested my forehead against his.

“Thank God I have you.”

“Ella you’re w-“

“Ella, hey!” A smooth voice greeted from behind my chair. I pulled apart from Jay lightning-fast, and glanced up into Tyler’s gorgeous face. His green eyes glanced curiously between me and Jay.

Flustered from the sudden change in subject, I smiled up at him. “Hey Tyler! You know Jay, right? Well of course you do! He was telling me about you at the bonfire – not that we talk about you! I mean that’d be weird and creepy and I’m not. Weird that is. I mean... um... have you had breakfast?”

Tyler laughed, clearly finding my babbling uncomfortable. That only made my blush increase by another few shades. “Yeah, I know Jay. Hey man.”

Jay nodded formally and stood up. “You’ll be okay Ella? I’m going to do some stuff.”

I nodded and squeezed his arm. “Thank you, for before.”

Jay smiled warmly at me, his eyes lingering for a few seconds, before turning, nodding again at Tyler and disappearing through the crowds of people.

“Sorry, did I interrupt something?” Tyler took the seat Jay had vacated, smiling at a few people around the table.

I glanced after where Jay had disappeared into. “No, sorry. I’m really out of it today!”

“You’re cute when you’re flustered,” he smiled that perfect smile of his, and I couldn’t help but smile back. I had all but forgotten the dilemma from a few minutes ago.

“Are you ready to have the time of your life?” Tyler stood up and gestured towards the door.

I followed his lead and grinned. “If you can keep up!”
