Chapter Twelve

"Ella are you ready?"

I looked up from the game of cards everyone was playing in our room, to see Jay standing at the door.

"For what?"

"I have two passes to leave for the day. Are you up for it?"

I jumped up before he could finish his sentence. "God, yes!" I hadn't had a chance to have any one on one time with Jay in the last few days, and with the weird things that had been going on, I really wanted some one on one time with my best friend. Whenever he was around, I felt whole and safe.

He laughed and nodded. "I'll meet you by the car?"

"Sure, be there in a sec!"

Alice smiled at me from the ground, while Maddie took the chance to steal a chip from the middle pile.

"Hey, have a great time!"

"Thank you! Oh, is there anything you guys want me to pick up? I can grab some food, or magazines...?"

Izzy snapped her head up. "Would you? I'm dying of cravings for mentos."

"Done," I laughed. Maddie and Alice threw in their requests while I changed out of my trackpants into a pair of shorts and a loose grey top. Quickly plaiting my hair into two french braids, I waved goodbye and headed out to the carpark.

Jay was in the car, playing our favourite playlist. I slid in and smiled breathlessly. "Hi! We have to pick up mentos, vogue magazine, caramello chocolate and strawberries. For the girls."

He nodded and began to reverse. "And for the lady?"

"I'm just happy to be spending time with you!"

Jay smiled and nodded. "Likewise."

We drove through the forest until the tree-bordered roads began to merge into city streets.

We were mostly silent, simply enjoying each others company. After a while Jay pulled into a carpark and we got out. I stretched my limbs and looked around. The cutest little cafe was nestled between a park and a second hand store, and it gave off these vibes like 'come in, sit down, relax, have a coffee'.

"Ohh Jay are we going in?"

"Sure are." He threw his arm around my shoulder, and I instinctively molded myself into his side.

We took our seats and I picked up my menu.

"Ohhh this looks so nice. What do you feel like getting?" I asked Jay, who was also examining the menu.

He raised an eyebrow at me. "Take one guess."

Eyeing the menu, I smiled. "Big breakfast, with extra bacon and multigrain toast, black coffee and a bagel with salmon and cream cheese?"

He reached over and tapped my nose. "Look at you, knowing me so well."

I shrugged and smiled angelically. "What can I say? I'm just fabulous."

He snorted. "And I suppose you'll have the scrambled eggs and a berry smoothie?"

Nodding, I sighed. "Look at us; we're like an old married couple."

"Darling did you bring the heart congestion pills? I feel my condition flaring up," Jay said in an old man's voice, screwing up his face.

I played along. "I told you time and time again. I've been carrying your pills for 50 years and I'm sick of it."
