Chapter Nine
I woke early the next morning, before the sun was even fully up. You know when you’re so wide awake that you can’t even bare to stay in bed? Well it was one of those instances, and there was no way I was getting back to sleep.
I slipped out of bed and put on some clothes as silently as I could. I managed to get out the door successfully, and did a silent happy dance at my ninja success.
The morning air was crisp but refreshing. It must have rained overnight, because everything was wet and the air smelt amazing. Not really knowing where I was going, I followed a path to my right for a little while. The only sound I could hear was the crunching of gravel and sticks under my shoes. The forest stretched out on either side of me, and for the hundredth time, I wondered what it would be like to run through it.... To be able to go so fast that you were just a blur of fur... To see everything in such amazing detail, and just run... I had dreamt about it so much that I physically craved doing it. But sadly, all I had were my two clumsy legs. A lot of use they were...
After a while I reached a fork in the path, and I chose the left. A few meters in, I regretted it. The path turned into a steep, narrow hill, and looked like it stretched on for ages. Curiosity was the only thing that kept me going.
Finally, a long trek up the unforgiving hill, I reached the end of the path, and boy was I glad I pushed on. I was at the top of a waterfall, with the most amazing view I had ever seen. The river stretched out for miles, twisting through the dense forest. In the distance, the sun was making its way slowly over the hills, lighting up the sky in brilliant oranges and reds. Transfixed with its beauty, I sat down near the water and just stared. Nature truly was so beautiful...
I don’t know how long I stayed up there, but by the time I decided to go back, I was beyond starving. It was nice to have a moment alone, to gather my thoughts. I always seemed to be surrounded by so many people that there was hardly ever a moment I got to myself.
When I reached the dining hall, breakfast was almost over. All the hot food was gone, so I grabbed a bowl of museli and looked around the room. I guess it was table hunting time. I was able to find my friends in no time; they were the loudest ones in the room. My pack was known to be quite... energetic. I slid into the seat next to Jay, who threw his arm around my shoulder.
“Well well well... If it isn’t the intrepid explorer. I was wondering how long it would take you to find the waterfall.” He grinned at me.
I dropped my jaw. “How did you know I was there?!”
He tapped his nose mysteriously and winked at me.
“Stalker.”
Jay just nodded quite solemnly, and I began to eat my breakfast. I was talking to Maria about some party she went to a few weeks ago, when Jay said, “don’t worry, we’re keeping a watch out.”
I smiled apologetically at Maria, and turned to Jay. “For what?”
He looked at me in confusion. “What do you mean, for what?”
“Don’t be a dick, I heard you! What are you watching out for?”
“Um Ella, I didn’t say anything just then.”
“Yes you did! Jay, I heard you! ‘Don’t worry, we’re keeping a watch out’. Is it really that big a deal that you can’t tell me?”
Realisation dawned on his face. Then confusion, closely followed by disbelief.
“What?” I asked, worried now.
“Ella, I didn’t say that out loud... I said it through the pack mindlink.”
