Chapter Seven
Alice, Maddie, Izzy and I walked together chatting the whole way there. Even Izzy threw in offhand comments every now and then. I felt as if she was warming to me... Or maybe she really was just a grumpy person in the morning. I had no idea where we were going, or what we were doing, but I was just all-round excited to be at the camp.
Finally, we arrived at a field, where a massive group of people were standing in a clump.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Football (A/N - soccer, depending on which country you’re in). Massive game happens every year.” Alice explained, walking around the outskirts of the field. I eyed up the group of people in the middle, who were waiting to be sorted into teams, I assumed.
The thing that comes as a surprise to most people is that I adored ball games. Any games, actually. Growing up with my dad and all the other guys his age, they were constantly shoving me onto a field. No matter how small I was, or the fact that I was a girl, they wouldn’t take mercy on me. Eventually my natural competitive streak kicked in and I found myself fighting hard to be stronger, better, faster. Jay and I used to spend days and days racing, and I won more often than not. So needless to say, I was itching to join in the game.
“Can anyone play?” I asked, bouncing slightly on the balls of my feet. Izzy eyed me sceptically.
“What, you want to play?” She scoffed. I nodded eagerly.
What, just because I was small and somewhat outspoken, people thought I wasn’t brave enough to play ball games with a bunch of fully grown male wolves?
“Yes. Can I?” The girls looked at each other worriedly.
“I don’t think there’s a rule against girls playing... But why would you want to? It’s brutal out there!” Maddie exclaimed.
“I can handle it, trust me.”
Izzy eyed me up and muttered, “I’ll alert the paramedics.”
Excitement filled every part of me. Now this was going to be fun. I squatted down and tied my shoe laces up tight, then handed my phone to Alice and retied my hair.
“Ella I really don’t think this is a good idea,” Maddie said.
Alice nodded in agreement. “There’s no way Jay would let you do this if he was here.”
“Seriously, you should see the games we have back home. I’ll be fine. Besides, someone’s gotta show them what a girl can do.” I smiled and jogged over to the group of guys.
A muscled guy with almost shaved hair was standing on a box, going through the rules. He saw me approach and stopped talking.
“You lost sweetheart?” He grinned patronisingly. Bang, instant dislike.
“No, I’m here for the game.” I replied sweetly.
A few guys in the crowd snickered. “Spectators usually watch from the sidelines.”
“Oh, I’m here to play! Please, do keep explaining the rules.” I said innocently.
More guys laughed, and the guy on the box jumped down and walked towards me. His 6’4” towered over my short frame, but I wasn’t intimidated. I simply held his stare, not backing down. “You want to play?”
I nodded.
“You see, this is a game for boys. You’d either be in the way or get hurt, and we do not need that. So why don’t you take those pretty little legs of yours right off the field and go do something tamer, like knitting club.” His eyes narrowed cockily, and a smug smirk stretched across his face. It always amazed me how a smirk can look so different on each person.
