~ Chapter 9 ~

Some days, I feel so frustrated I want to punch someone.  Like on the way to the lair, I was ready to strike Casey Jones.  I doubt he knew how much he was annoying me, but I was in a bad mood before he opened his mouth.

I scowled as he and April were idly talking, walking briskly past everything and everyone as if they weren't there.  Including me.

I huffed loudly as I carried four large pizza boxes, Mikey's orders.  Splinter had let them take the day off from training, which was unlike him.  Leo had concerns about it and Mikey called me, demanding I bring pizzas to ease their worries.  I don't know how pizza can calm nerves, but apparently it works for teenage turtles.

April and Casey left me in the dust, explaining that they had tutoring to do and tell the turtles, "Hello."  So, I had to lift the manhole cover, carefully climb down a ladder with four boxes balancing on one hand and then put the cover back on by myself.  Then trudging through the sewers alone isn't that wonderful, either.  Especially with the occasional rat running across your feet, causing you to jump.

It seemed like forever, but I finally reached the lair, the turtles very lax.  I set the boxes in the kitchen, the scent slowly wafting through out the rooms.

The lair was eerie and silent, almost like someone had died.  Maybe someone did, maybe it was our spirits, the thought of smiling and goofing around made us lack the energy to do so.  Even Mikey's eyes didn't shine as bright as they should've when he saw the pizza.

Leo sat quietly on the sofa, Space Hero scenes flashed across the screen.  He didn't even try to quote any of the lines.  I bit my lip as I made my way over to him.

I gently poked his cheek, "Hey, you okay?"

He turned his head slightly, noticing my presence and shrugging.  "Fine, where's April and Casey?"

"Tutoring at April's.  They told me to say 'hello.'"

Leo nodded as he turned his attention back to the tv.  "Ah, okay."

"Splinter meditating?"  I asked, trying to start a conversation.

Again, I got a shrug.  "Haven't seen him since this morning."  He explained, blandly.

I exhaled deeply, "Alright then, I'll be in my room if anyone needs me."

Leo responded with a slight nod.  With that, I walked to the rooms, swinging open the last door on the left.  Before I went in, I glanced over my shoulder.  The empty room across from me, the room where Nick's mom spent most of her days.

I took a step back from my room and crossed the hall.  The door was slightly ajar, the room black.  I gently pushed open the door, it swung with a groan.  I glanced inside.  Nothing had been moved, no ghost, only dust has settled upon the items that laid inside.  I sighed with relief, half expecting to see something inside.

I shuffled inside the room, glancing at the contents that were laying around.  The twin sized bed was shoved in the corner, the blankets in a mess.  I didn't dare touch them, in fear Nick might pop out of nowhere and yell at me for disturbing things.  Instead, a light pink book caught my eyes.  An image of pink petals were etched on the cover with no name.  A diary?  I slowly opened it.  A scrapbook.  I hesitantly closed it.  I had no right going through a dead woman's stuff.  I set the book where I found it and left the room.

I closed the door behind me as I walked into my room.  I could almost image Nick laying on the bottom bunk with a grin plastered against her face.

'Hey, Bekka!  Let's go steal Bandit!  Haha, Greenie will freak out for sure!'

A smile tugged at my lips, as my eyes gazed sadly at her necklace was curled up on her pillow.  The chain was snap when she ripped it off her neck.
