"Three.."
I eagerly cracked open the fortune cookie in my hand. Some of the crumbs went on my leggings, oh well I thought as I dust them off. I read the words on the tiny, thin paper and took it in. I never got one like this before, most of them were straight forward and didn't have more than one meaning.
I looked over to Ashton. It was obvious he was reading his fortune with thought. He was so concentrated, maybe trying to analyze the writing. Hopefully he didn't get those freaky ones that mention death.
"So what does yours say?" I interrogated as I rolled my fortune up into a miniature scroll.
Ash looked hard at his fortune once more. "You can still love what you can not have in life," he spoke blankly.
"Interesting. What's your interpretation of it?"
"It is pretty straight forward, so, I guess that it's okay to love something or someone that's no longer in your life." He answered. He didn't have to think about that one. "Crap, does that mean I have to give something up?"
"That's what I thought too, and that could possibly happen. I mean these fortune cookies are pretty foreshadowing." I spoke. As lame as it sounds, after watching that movie Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan, I've been a big believer in fortune cookies. You could say I'm a tad bit superstitious. I freak out whenever a black cat crosses my path.
"I'll give anything up but internet!" Ashton uttered, "oh plus wifi and music!"
I chuckled hard, "ah Ashton, same, same."
Well that's basically all teenagers, Ashton, I speculated.
Setting down his fortune next to his cup, he ate a piece of the cookie. "But what does yours say?" He added.
I tilted my head to the side and cited, "love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence."
"Isn't that striking?"
"Yes, but that can mean so many things," I claimed in a sadistic tone and sighed. I couldn't think properly. I've already had a hectic day, thanks Calum and Ashton. Living in America was easier than this!
Ashton laughed, "nah, it depends on what you think it means, since you are the one who received it."
I smiled hard. "Why couldn't I get a straight forward like yours?" I whined.
His grin and laugh grew bigger. "Well, maybe because that fortune was truly meant for you. Maybe you'll be faced with some sort of love problem."
Ash was right. Maybe I would be faced with a love problem. A love triangle to be specific. Oh triangles.
"Erm, what do you mean love problem?" I energetically asked with a kick in my voice.
"You know, you might hit some bumps along the road, that's all. Probably nothing too bad," Ashton said after taking a sip of his tea.
"I hope so," I commented., "I really hope so." Inside, I could feel dryness spreading in my throat. Maybe I need to "go" to the bathroom again? But what if he notices something's up? What if he thinks I'm avoiding him?
I clenched my cup of tea and took tiny sips then ate my fortune cookie. I delicately put my "words of the future" away in my bag. Now that my fortune might not be a good thing, I might as well not keep it anymore. Now it's going to be in my head this whole week. Aw shit, I just remembered the gathering at Ashton's house at the end of this week, crap!
"So, are you going to help yourself to some almond cookies?" He asked with pleasure. "I heard they're good and that they bake 'em here fresh daily."
