"Uh sorry what was it again?"
"Oh my god, Naya. Are you always not listening to my alluring voice?"
"Well a big fucking sorry. I'm trying to multitask talking to my boyfriend and feeding the penguins which are both, may I add, extremely demanding."
"What can I say? The Lancasters have always been quite the challenge."
"Oh and I believe I've got the biggest and the fattest of them all."
"Sweetheart, we both know that that is a lie because you've clearly seen what lies beneath my shirt and you like it."
"Yeah, yeah. They're so fine and sculpted, carved by God himself. Such detailed and sexy contours of the male body painted on Silas Lancaster. Are you happy now?"
"That's what I like to hear."
"Sure you do..."
"So last time it was the otters. Now penguins? What kinda penguins?"
"Adélie penguins."
"Sweet."
"Where are you anyway? Sounds busy over there."
"On the bus. My car broke down so I had to send it in to the shop for a day to get it fixed."
"That's not too bad then since you live near the airport."
"Yeah but its quite packed today."
"Did you get a seat?"
[Just then, an elderly woman hobbles into the bus and Silas instantaneously gets up with the phone in one hand, gesticulating to her, "Have it."]
"Silas?"
[She thanks him by giving him a pat on the back as he flashes a warm smile.]
"Uh, nope, not anymore. Just gave it up to an elderly woman."
"For real? Or is that just to impress me?"
"Sweetheart, I'm not that big of a dickhead."
"Oh so you admit that you are one."
"Na-"
"I'm proud."
"Of what?"
"That I'm yours. I'm proud that I'm with a man so kind and with a heart so good. Amidst the cockiness and your smart ass, I adore you."
[Silas grins from ear to ear, a smile so wide Naya felt it radiating through the phone.]
"You never fail to put me into a state of euphoria with your sweet nothings. Do you know that? It's insane."
"And you make me smile even when there is the foul smell of fish in a cold, wet penguin enclosure."
"God, I can't wait to see you."
"Not a day goes by when I don't feel the same way. And I cant believe I haven't winced at the amount of cheese I'm swimming in."
"Ahhhh... I love you, Naya."
[It took a month, a month to say things she never thought she'd say again.]
"I think so too."
[Or maybe it was even before that, in the days they adored, infuriated, laughed, cried, smiled and hurt. They experienced sensations, the sheer thrill and the adrenaline of pure ecstasy. It was something like love.]
"I love you, Lancaster."
