Lilypaw woke up with a jolt and looked outside excitedly. She saw nothing but darkness. She sighed in disappointment. Dawn won't ever get here. Lilypaw rested her head on her paws. She wanted it to be morning so badly. Grayheart said that at dawn the older apprentices would be doing their warrior assessments. She let out a long breath.
"Great StarClan! You've been huffing like a badger all night!" Olivepaw hissed sleepily. Lilypaw squeaked in surprise. She thought that she was being quiet.
"Sorry." Lilypaw mewed. Olivepaw snorted and stood up. He shook out his fur.
"What are you doing? It's only Moonhigh." Lilypaw asked. She watched as the tom started for the den entrance.
"I won't be able to fall asleep again for a while so I'm going to practice for tomorrow." Olivepaw replied. Lilypaw's ear pricked. She had been wanting to perfect her skills.
"Can I come?" Lilypaw asked as she quickly stood up. Olivepaw looked back at her over his shoulder.
"Sure." He mewed "but you have to be quiet." Lilypaw nodded and carefully stepped over the sleeping cats. She peeked her head out of the den and saw Olivepaw talking with Snowbreeze and Berrysplash. She padded over to the three cats.
"We just want to go and practice for our assessment tomorrow." Olivepaw whispered. Berrysplash and Snowbreeze exchanged a knowing look that made Lilypaw's ears grow hot.
"Sure. Just be back before dawn. You will still need to rest." Snowbreeze murmured. Lilypaw started to walk beside Olivepaw in the direction of the river. She heard Berrysplash and Snowbreeze start talking behind them.
"Even Sunpaw and Owlheart hide their love better than those two." She heard Snowbreeze say in a hushed voice. Lilypaw felt her ears grow hot again. I don't think we act like mates. He's like my brother. She quickened her pace to keep up with Olivepaw. She broke into a run and ran ahead of Olivepaw. He started to run behind her. They reached the river quickly after they started running. They gasped in shock when they saw the river. It was much lower than it should be especially in green-leaf. It had been very hot lately and it felt like the sun was going to burn her fur off.
"No use trying to get fish that's not there. Let's practice forest hunting." Lilypaw looked at Olivepaw. He nodded and crept towards the forest. Lilypaw went a different direction. They were hunting for a while when Lilypaw finally smelled a mouse. She instantly shrunk down and stealthily crept forward. She saw a furry little body nibbling on a nut. She leaped at the mouse. She landed on the prey and quickly nipped it's spine. She hid the mouse under a bramble bush. She was about to start hunting again when Olivepaw shrieked. She saw him out of the corner of her eye. She was about to turn when she felt claws grab her and pick her up off the ground. The ground was at least a tail length away from her.
"Lilypaw!" Olivepaw shrieked again. He leaped up and tried to grab the giant hawk. He caught it's leg with his claws and the bird screeched in pain. Olivepaw started clawing his way closer to the hawk's throat.
"Hold onto me!" Olivepaw yelled to Lilypaw. She dug her claws into the toms back. Olivepaw reached up and slashed the hawk's throat. It screeched and they started to fall. Lilypaw was still holding onto Olivepaw's back. They were about to hit the ground when Olivepaw jumped off the hawk. The hawk slammed against the ground. When Olivepaw jumped, he timed it so they wouldn't be injured by the impact. Lilypaw slid off the toms back.
"Are you ok? Does anything hurt? Did the hawks talons puncture your skin?" Olivepaw attacked her with questions. She caught her breath and prepared to answer the wave of questions.
"Yes. No. No." Lilypaw replied sarcastically. She saw Olivepaw roll his eyes.
"You need to be more careful. I... I mean the Clan can't afford to lose you." Olivepaw mewed seriously. Lilypaw saw that he truly did care and she felt her heart twist. I don't want to hurt him, but he's only a friend to me.
