Eager to change the subject, I asked,
“So girls, what did you do after the big game?”
“We went to Kaithleen Spencer’s party. It was awesome, you should have come!” Kerry exclaimed excitedly, having suddenly forgotten all about the boys’ awkward presence.
“Anything interesting happened?” I raised my eyebrows suggestively.
“Well Brianna broke up with Nate. They had this massive argument in front of everybody.” Kerry explained.
I frowned at that. He hadn’t looked sad or bothered on Saturday morning.
“Because of the girls he flirted with at the game?” I was curious now.
“No, because of some girl he drove to school apparently…”
“Hmmm… That would be me but…”
“It was you?!” Alicia interrupted me.
“Well yeah… But Sam was also in the car and come on! I mean…” I was at loss for words.
I’d understand if she’d been pissed off by his blatant flirting at the game but breaking up with him over ugly duckling me… That sounded so… weird!
“He was apparently too nice and friendly with you…” Kerry shrugged.
“Yeah… friendly being the key word, there… I mean, come on… I’ll admit that he’s kind of grown on me a bit and we do get on pretty well now, I suppose, considering how we couldn’t go without insulting one another when we first met, but he’s still an arrogant douche with girls so…”
When nobody reacted I looked around and realized that the four of them were gaping at me.
“What?!” I was confused now.
“Are you sure nothing is going on between Nate and you?” Kerry asked with furrowed eyebrows.
“For God’s sake! NOTHING’S GOING ON!” I exploded before realizing that my reaction had maybe been slightly extreme, so I tried to explain it to them, “Matt got all pissed off on Saturday because he somehow also assumed something was going on…”
Their silence confused me even more so I continued,
“If you want the truth, Nate and I professed our hate to one another before calling a truce and deciding to remain civil to one another for the sake of you know, the other boys…”
The table was still eerily quiet.
“Don’t tell me you don’t believe me…” I started.
“No Maya…” Alicia’s voice was small. “It’s what you said about Matt that’s got us speechless…”
I tilted my head to show I didn’t get what she meant.
I was surprised to hear Tim’s voice.
“What she meant was that Matthew Crane is not usually one to show any emotion…”
“Especially towards girls…” Kerry added.
Fuck, maybe that was too much information…
“Well yeah, especially about girls…” He went on. “So to hear you imply that he got jealous over you and Nate…”
“I never said he was jealous…” I interrupted him.
“Please!” Tim’s arrogant tone was back. ‘Why was he pissed off, then?”
I bit my lower lip and shrugged.
