Just like angels there are more than one type of demon. Some types of demons have powers that their lessors will not possess, making them hold more power. The rank of demons go in the order of knights of hell, white-eyed demons, Azazel, and lastly crossroads demons.
Knights of hell are hand picked by Cain himself and they are some of the demons with extra powers. The knights will usually view other demons as inferior and won't treat them with the least bit of respect. The knights are all dead now, that's actually part of why I'm writing this. You see, Cain fell in love with a woman named Colette and left the knights in 1863, or at least he tried to. The other knights didn't like the thought of Cain leaving, so they kidnapped Colette and Cain let his anger take over once again. He went in and killed all of the knights, accept for one; her name was Abaddon. Abaddon got away because, she tricked Cain into killing Colette, but their relationship isn't that simple, Cain dated Abaddon in the past. The only reason why Cain didn't kill Abaddon was because, he promised Colette, he would never kill again and he didn't, at least not for a long time. He gave the mark to Dean Winchester, who then killed Abaddon and Cain with the first blade. The first blade is the only thing tat can kill a knight of hell, and it's useless without the Mark of Cain.
There are only two white-eyed demons to ever exist. Both of them are dead now, but they should still be known. They were named Lilith and Alistair. A white-eyed demon is one of the first demons ever created. They are very powerful, just like a knight of hell. Lilith was turned into a demon from being tortured into immense amounts of pain by Lucifer; this is how all demons are created. White-eyed demons ruled hell at points where Lucifer could not, until their death that is.
Azazel is the only yellow-eyed demon to ever exist. It's unknown as to why he has yellow eyes, but he has a great amount of power, like white-eyed demons and knights of hell. Azazel is like all other demons and had to rise to power on his own, slowly working his way up the ladder until he became a well know and feared demon. Azazel worked hard to find the door to Lucifer's cage and unlock it, as he was one of Lucifer's most devoted demons.
Crossroads demons are the lowest rank of all demons. They make crossroads deals, which usually lasts for ten years before the person who made the deal is mauled to death by hellhounds. Hellhounds are giant dog like creatures that are controlled by demons and used as a murder weapon when a crossroads deal is over. Hellhounds can only be seen and heard by the people who they are sent out after and because, of this it gives the illusion that who they're sent after is crazy.
