The four horseman have been around since shortly after humanity was tainted. The group always traveled together in the beginning, but as time went on they went their separate ways. The four go by the names for Pestilence, Famine, War, and Death; all of the horseman, except Death are alive. There are four rings that exist to control their powers and they can only teleport without them. These four rings are the key to Lucifer's cage.
Pestilence, War, and Famine always did their jobs as they were supposed to until Lucifer tried to take control of them because, he wanted them to help start the apocalypse. They agreed, but didn't like it and never spoke up. The Winchesters came around and took their rings by force because, none of them would give them up willingly.
There's not much to tell of Death; he always did his job and at times this made him come out to look like an asshole. He helped Dean and Sam Winchester get Lucifer back in the box and never disobeyed what his job ordered, at least not until he tried to stop the darkness from being released. The Winchesters killed Death when he tried to force Dean to kill his brother, promising that he would take him away from Earth, to a place where Dean could never hurt anyone again. They didn't know what the banishment of the mark would do and because of this they took it off of Dean, who was the last holder of the mark after he killed Cain and that is when the darkness was released again.
