Crushed Dreams

Chapter Seven

    Using the force to strengthen his sprint, Kanan led the way across the restless bridge as it shook beneath his feet, nearly throwing him off balance.

    He glanced behind him, making sure his companion was there. She was, though from the look on her face she was struggling. Kanan paused, letting her catch up, struggling for a breath despite himself.

    "I'm....fine." Hera said between gasping rugged breaths, noting the concern on his face. Shaking his head, Kanan touched her shoulder gently."No, your not." Hera coughed forcefully, almost doubling up in pain. "Hey, take it easy." He murmured to her.

    Gently, he guided her hands to his shoulders so she could support herself. Closing his eyes, he touched her force signature, making sure his radiated peace and comfort. "We....don't....have....time." Hera was struggling to speak. There's always time for you. Kanan kept that though to himself. The ends of the bridge quaked, the far side crumbling into the chasm below.

    Hera stiffened. "And now we don't have time." He told her, his usual sarcasm lacing his words. Holding Hera by her shoulders, he spun her around, giving her a gentle push for momentum.

    Gasping and out of breath again, the two raced across the bridge. Were not going to make it.... By now the middle had caved, sending fine cracks racing their way. Hera was giving it her all, and although he could go faster, Kanan wouldn't even think of leaving her.

    Forty feet, thirty feet, twenty feet.... The end of the bridge drew near. For a second, Kanan believed they would make it, and then there was a deafening crack, and the bridge broke in two.
